이 글은 영화 <나인스 게이트>의 서사적 특성을 원작소설인 『뒤마클럽』과의 비교를 통하여 밝히고, 영화 <나인스 게이트>의 서사주체인 코소의 변화 과정을 살피는 데 그 목적을 둔 것이었다. 영화 <나인스 게이트>의 서사적 특성은 원작소설인 『뒤마클럽』과의 비교를 통하여 이루어졌다. 영화 <나인스 게이트>와 원작소설인 『뒤마클럽』은 서사의 주체인 코소가 『어둠의 왕국으로 가는 아홉 개의 문』의 진본여부를 파헤치기 위하여 스페인과 프랑스를 여행하고, 그 여정에서 갖가지 모험을 경험하게 된다는 큰 틀의 흐름은 동일하다. 그러나 영화 <나인스 게이트>에서는 『뒤마클럽』에서 중요하게 다루었던 <앙주의 포도주>에 대한 진본탐색은 아예 배제하면서 『어둠의 왕국으로 가는 아홉 개의 문』을 분석하고 그 책으로 인하여 일어나는 사건들을 그려내는 데 집중한다. 그에 따라 영화 <나인스 게이트>는 코소라는 책사냥꾼이 『어둠의 왕국으로 가는 아홉 개의 문』이라는 작품을 열쇠로 삼아 천상의 문을 열고 들어가는 여정을 다룬 서사가 되었고, 원작 소설 『뒤마클럽』은 코소라는 인물이 『삼총사』라는 작품과 현실 사이의 혼돈에서 흔들리다가 현실로 돌아오는 여정을 다룬 서사가 되었다. 영화 <나인스 게이트>의 서사 주체인 코소의 변화과정은 그가 여정에서 만나게 되는 사람들과의 관계, 사건등을 중심으로 정리해보았다. 그리하여 코소가 끈질긴 탐구심과 분석능력을 토대로 사건을 해결해나가면서 주체적인 인물로 거듭났음을 살필 수 있었다. 나아가 그런 코소였기에 『어둠의 왕국으로 가는 아홉 개의 문』의 마지막 과정이라 할 수 있는 아홉 번째 문을 열고 천상으로 들어가는 성과를 거둘 수 있었다고 보았다. 이러한 논의가 지닌 의미를 간략히 정리해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, <나인스 게이트>는 원작소설인 『뒤마클럽』에서 남긴 결말인 `아홉 번째 문을 누가 열 것인가`를 단서로 창작된 것이다. 이는 원작에서 유보된 결말을 채우는 것으로부터 시작되는 창작의 한 예가 될 것이다. 둘째, <나인스 게이트>의 코소는 대단한 영웅이 아니라 평범한 소시민에 속하는 인물이지만, 그가 놓치지 않았던 탐구심으로 인하여 위험을 극복하고 성취를 이루게 된다. 우리들의 삶에서 대단한 능력을 소유하기는 어렵지만, 호기심과 탐구심을 지속하는 것은 노력여하에 따라 가능할 것이다. 그런 점에서 <나인스 게이트>는 하나에 집중된 힘이 어떤 극점에 도달할 수 있는지 고민케 하는 작품이 되리라 본다.

This article was to clarify the epical characteristics of < The Ninth Gate > and the changing process of Corso who is an agent of epic in that movie. Thus, first of all, i tried to compare with “El club Dumas o La sombra de Richelieu” that is the original of < The Ninth Gate > movie. In 2nd chapters, contents according to flowing, the original novel 『El club Dumas』 and the plot of movie < The Ninth Gate > was arranged. And then the point of sameness and difference was discussed. The point of sameness which is important two works have is as follows. It was commonness flowing that Corso disclosed the secret of the original book 『DE UMBRARUM REGNI NOVEM PORTIS』 on his trip to Spain and France. Despite the hardships on his trip, he lights on the secret of three original books which have a different illustration respectively, unlike the original book 『DE UMBRARUM REGNI NOVEM PORTIS』 which is only one in commonsensical judgment. The point of difference between 『El club Dumas』 and < The Ninth Gate > was found at the situation that Corso, book hunter, starts a trip with what kind of data. As a result, I could see that < The Ninth Gate > movie is the epic of journey that Corso moves into the world of light opening the gate of heaven. The original book 『DE UMBRARUM REGNI NOVEM PORTIS』 was the key to Corso. And the original novel 『El club Dumas』 was the epic of journey that Corso comes out the trap which was confused with 『The Three Musketeers』 and returns with an actuality. In 3rd chapters, I suggest a discussion how Corso of < The Ninth Gate > could be able to open the ninth gate without a sense of purpose which tried to do. Specially the point that pays attention from this article is the process of delicate emotion of Corso. It is to clarify how Corso`s trip searching for the original book could change his condition in collision of other people. Thus, I found that Corso be born again as independent character on the basis of intellectual curiosity and strong analytic ability in his case which is the best advantage of Corso. So, he obtains good results which is the last process of 『DE UMBRARUM REGNI NOVEM PORTIS』 that moves into the world of light opening the gate of heaven. Now < The Ninth Gate > movie and the searching the process of Corso could be arranged as follows. First, < The Ninth Gate > being created by clue - `does who can open the ninth gate` - in ending of the original novel 『El club Dumas』. Therefore, we can create a new one from the process which fills in abeyance ending on the original novel. Second, Corso succeeded dramatically in < The Ninth Gate > is ordinary citizen. He is neither hero nor genius who has the natural ability. but Corso is the man with a strongly inquiring mind. That is groundwork for problem-solving on all occasions. We hard to achieve the excellent ability for our life, but the curiosity and the inquiring mind about something can be able to maintain as our exertion. In this point, < The Ninth Gate > is work with the one answer for what we have to strengthen through the character called `Corso`
