본고는 수성궁의 인적 구성을 이루는 궁녀 집단을 하나의 사회 형상으로 보고, 그 의미를 파악하기 위해 마련되었다. 논의를 통하여 수성궁의 사회는 일정한 방향의 작가적 전망을 반영하고 있고, 또 그것은 당대 상황에 대한 인식 위에 설정되고 있음을 확인할 수 있을 것이다. 우선, 수성궁 궁녀들이 운영의 애정행위에 대응하는 태도를 통하여 한 사회에서 집단과 개인 사이의 관계 설정이 어떠해야 하는지에 대한 작가적 관점을 읽어낼 수 있다. 이합집산을 일삼는 현실의 경우와 다른, 상대방에 대한 인격적 존중심에 바탕을 둔 인간관계이다. 다음으로, 남궁과 서궁의 궁녀들이 완사(浣紗) 장소를 결정하는 문제를 두고 벌이는 토론과정은 사회적 의제를 다루는 방식에 대한 방향을 제시한다. 개인의 다양한 의사가 존중됨으로써 결과적으로 이견은 조율되고 갈등은 극복될 수 있다는 메시지가 담겨있다고 할 수 있다. 마지막으로 사회를 이끌어 가는 지도자가 갖추어야 할 덕목을 보여주고 있다. 수성궁의 궁주는 안평대군이지만, 궁녀 사회를 하나의 집단 개념으로 본다면 주목해야 할 인물은 자란이 될 것이다. 수성궁의 궁녀들을 통해서 보여주려고 한 사회는 파당적 이해관계가 첨예하던 당대의 정치상황과 관련되어 있다. 즉 수성궁은 당대적 모순이 극복되고 지양된 가장 이상적인 사회형상이라고 할 수 있다. 관념적으로 설정된 그러한 사회 형상이 결코 현실에서는 실현될 수 없다는 인식이, 수성궁의 인적 관계를 애정의 파탄이라는 이야기에 실어 비극 서사로 표현한 작가서술적 태도라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
The aim of this study is to examine the meaning of Character`s relationship of < Wunyung-Jun >, one of the most famous classical novels in Josun Dynasty. Especially, the court ladies` group in the Susung Palace, the main story place of this novel, will be considered as a society. Till now, most reserchers have regarded the Susung Palace as the symbol of absolute power in the middle age. But I pointed out the place has the meaning as the center of literature and art in my previous paper. Looked at from that point of view, the Susung Palace means the ideal world which we want to get to. first of all, we can find the meaning of relationship between group and individual through Wunyung`s love with her boyfriend, Kim Jinsa. That is the human relationship on the basis of the respect for others. Second, through the debate to decide place for washing clothes, the writer suggest the method for dealing with social agenda. It means that the respect for various opinions make the social conflict over come. Finally, the society show the virtue which a leader have to prepare. Jaran is a leader of court ten ladies in Susung Palace. Her behavior show the leader of a group have to have the special ability for leading group members. Court ladies` society of SuSung Palace are related to the political situation in that age which caused the sharp conflict between several parties. Therefore, Susung Palace means the most ideal society which become to overcome the social problems.
