본 연구는 학부모의 사교육 지원 활동이 학부모와 자녀를 포함한 가정과 학교 그리고 사회적 상황과의 상호작용을 통해 이루어지고 있음을 밝히고 그 과정에서 발견되는 현상에 대한 실제 이론을 탐색하고자 하였다. 그 과정에서 나타나는 현상의 맥락과 경험의 의미는 Charmaz의 구성주의 근거이론방법과 정형화된 기법과 절차를 따르는 Strauss와 Corbin의 근거이론방법을 활용하여 해석적 이론으로 도출되었다. 본 연구에서는 사회계층별 총 36명의 학부모들을 연구참여자로 선정하여 이들의 경험에 관한 실제적 이야기를 통해 우리 교육의 제 문제를 깊이 있게 살펴볼 수 있었다. 연구 결과, 패러다임 모형에서의 인과적 조건은 `가정학습에 한계가 있음`과 `성적 향상을 기대함`, 맥락적 조건은 `학력·학벌사회 풍토`, `공교육을 신뢰하지 않음` 그리고 `입시·사교육 정책이 자주바뀜`, 중심현상은 `사교육은 필수임`, 중재적 조건은 `사교육비 지출 능력`, `정보력의 유무`, `자녀의 의지` 그리고 `정부 정책에 대한 신뢰 수준`, 상호작용의 전략적 행위인 `사교육 지원 활동`은 `정부 지원의 학교 안 사교육`, `정부 지원의 학교 밖 사교육`, `학교 밖일반사교육` 그리고 `사교육 규제에 대응`으로 나타났다. 일련의 범주분석 과정을 통해 `조기 사교육 결정`, `지속적인 사교육 지원` 그리고 `사교육의 일상화`가 결과로 도출되었다. 또한 본 연구는 범주들을 속성과 차원으로 정교화 한 패러다임 범주분석을 통해 `학부모의 사교육 지원 유형`을 핵심범주로 구분하여 각 유형의 이론적 특징들을 탐색할 수 있었다. `학부모의 사교육 지원 유형`은 학부모의 사회계층에 따라 `적극적 지원형`, `현실 대처형` 그리고 `최소 지원형`이라는 3개의 이론적 유형으로 구분되어졌으며, 이러한 유형 구분을 통해 학부모의 사회계층이 자녀의 사교육 지원에 상당한 영향을 주고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 학부모의 사교육 지원은 우리 교육 현실에서 필수적이며 모든 계층에서 일상화되어 나타나고 있지만, 학부모 간의 계층차가 사교육 지원 유형에 분명히 드러나고 있어 계층 간의 사교육 지원으로 인한 교육 불평등이 심화되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

This study has drawn the meanings of context and experience in parents` activity to support private education performed inside and outside the school and phenomena found in the process based on analytical theories by applying grounded theory. According to the results, the central phenomena of `private education being essential` have been found in parents` experience to support their children`s private education. Distinguishing `the types of private education support given by parents` as core categories through categorical analysis, this author explored each type`s theoretical characteristics. `The private education support of Parents` was classified into three theoretical types: `the active support type` social strata, `the responding to reality type`, and `minimal support type`. With this categorization, this researcher has learned that parents` social strata influence their support for children`s private education considerably. Parents` support for private education is found to be very usual and essential in Korean education regardless of social strata; however, the gap between parents` social strata is distinctly shown in each type supporting private education. Therefore, the complaining of educational inequality gets either deepened or reproduced by each social stratum`s support of private education.
