본 연구는 주로 문화 간 커뮤니케이션 분야에 적용되어왔던 커뮤니케이션 수용이론을 한국 사회 내에서 지방출신 사람들이 서울말에 적응하는 과정에 적용하여, 서울에 거주하고 있는 지방출신 대학생들을 대상으로 1)응답자 특성에 따라 서울말 사용에 차이를 보이는지, 2)서울말을 수용하는데 영향을 미치는 요인들은 무엇인지 살펴보았다. 주요 연구결과를 보면, 첫째, 응답자들은 지역 방언을 사용함으로써 사회적으로 배척당한 경험은 낮았으나 현재 서울말을 주로 사용하고 있었다. 하지만 이들의 표준어 사용 노력이나 표준어 사용 이점에 대한 인식은 대체로 낮은 편이었다. 여학생이 남학생에 비해 서울말 사용 빈도가 높았고, 출신지별로 보면 영남권 출신들의 서울말 사용빈도와 서울말을 완벽하게 사용한다고 생각하는 비율은 타 지역에 비해 유의미하게 낮았다. 반면, 영남출신들은 다른 지역출신들에 비해 같은 지역친구들과 만났을 때 사투리를 사용하는 빈도는 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 인지된 표준어 사용 이점에 대한 인식이 높고 또래 집단이 서울말을 많이 사용할수록 서울말 사용빈도 등이 높았다. 흥미롭게도 일반적인 예상과는 달리, 서울에 대한 선망의 감정이 낮고, 사투리 사용으로 인한 사회적 배척을 덜 경험할수록 서울말의 사용 빈도는 증가하고 서울말을 보다 완벽하게 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 기존의 커뮤니케이션 수용이론은 주로 상이한 문화가 충돌할 때 개인이 언어/커뮤니케이션을 선택하는 방식에 적용되었으나, 본 연구는 하나의 문화권에서 방언의 사용과 표준어로의 동화과정, 그에 영향을 주는 요인들을 살펴보았다. 위의 연구결과들을 볼 때, 상대적으로 한 나라의 같은 문화권에서 이루어지는 커뮤니케이션 수용에 영향을 주는 요인들은 상이한 문화권에서 이루어지는 커뮤니케이션 수용과는 다소 차이가 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 방언사용으로 인한 사회적 배척 정도가 매우 낮은 점도 연구의 흥미로운 발견이었으며, 지역권별로 서울말 적응에 다소 차이가 나는 점도 흥미로웠다. 그 이유에 대해 향후 질적 연구를 통해 보다 상세히 살펴볼 필요가 있겠다.
Applying Communication Accommodation Theory, this study examined the use of standard language (seoul regional language) among college students from other provinces who reside in Seoul. More specifically, the study examined 1) whether there are differences in terms of the students` use of standard language depending on the characteristics of the respondents, 2) factors influencing the accommodation of standard language. Results showed that, first, the respondents frequently used the standard language in their daily lives and rarely experienced a form of social exclusion due to their use of dialects. The respondents` endeavor and perceived merit of using standard language were relatively low. Female students tended to speak standard language more often whereas students from Youngnam region spoke standard language in a lesser degree compared to students from other regions. Secondly, respondents who perceived the merit of using standard language and whose peer group mainly use standard language used standard language more often. Contrary to our expectation, respondents who less experienced a social exclusion due to their use of dialects and who showed a less degree of envy toward Seoul speak more and speak perfect standard language. Communication accommodation theory which has mainly been applied to intercultural situations were applied to this study in order to examine the factors affecting the use of dialects among college students and their accommodating process to the standard language within a culture. The study found that factors influencing communication accommodation within a culture could be different from communication accommodation across the cultures.
