이 논문은 마리 드 부르고뉴의 시도서 초상화 페이지를 분석하면서 중세 후기 여성 독자의 이미지와 읽기 관행에 대해 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 초상화 페이지 중앙의 그림과 여백의 장식은 개인 독서와 공동 독서, 낭독과 묵독, 암기된 독서와 기억하는 독서, 묵상 독서, 시각적인 독서 관행을 직접적으로 혹은 암묵적으로 보여주고 있다. 마리의 `초상화`는 독서의 순간을 생생하게 포착해내고 있다. 14세기 이후 성모나 성녀의 독서 장면이 시각 예술에서 널리 확산되었지만, 평신도 여성이 단순히 기도를 하는 것이 아니라 실제로 책을 읽는 장면을 묘사한 조형 이미지는 드문 편이었다. 따라서 마리의 초상화는 당시로서는 대단히 획기적이며 여성의 책 읽기 혹은 여성 독자에 대한 당대의 인식 변화를 보여준다. 마리의 화면 뒤편의 창밖의 공간은 성당의 내부를 묘사하고 있다. 성당의 제단 앞에서 책의 주문자인 요크의 마거릿이 부르고뉴 궁정의 여러 여인들과 함께 성모 마리아에게 기도를 드리고 있다. 배경을 포함한 초상화 페이지 전체는 단지 “여성 공동체”를 상징한다기 보다는 가정 내에서의 수직적인 독서 공동체를 암묵적으로 표현하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 이는 기도서라는 책을 매개로 어머니가 자녀들에게 기초적인 문자 교육과 종교 교육을 담당하는 공동체를 말한다. 마리 드 부르고뉴의 시도서 여백 장식도 특별한 문화적인 의미를 지니고 있다. 중세 필사본의 레이아웃과 여백의 장식은 특히 기억술과 밀접한 관계가 있다. 특히 마리 드 부르고뉴 시도서 곳곳의 여백에 그려진 새의 이미지는 기억의 은유를 담고 있다. 필사본의 곳곳에서 출몰하는 새들은 라틴어에 서툰 평신도 독자에게 라틴어 기도문을 외워서 읽도록 촉구하는 동시에 기도문에 담긴 내용과 종교적인 내용을 묵상을 통해 되새기는 `기억하는 독서`를 하도록 권장하고 있다.

This study proposes to analyse a portrait page in the Book of Hours which was produced for Mary of Burgundy, the last heiress of the duchy of Burgundy in the Late Middle Ages. Through this analysis, it will be possible to observe women readers` images and reading practices during this era. This page presents, explicitly and implicitly, various kind of medieval reading practices: individual and collective readings, reading aloud and silent reading, memorized reading and memorial reading, meditative reading, and visual reading. The portrait of Mary of Burgundy is groundbreaking and innovative because it depicts a laywoman`s reading vividly and in detail. Although scenes of the Virgin Mary reading were depicted frequently in visual arts since the 14th century, those of representing the readings of laywomen were rare. The portrait of Mary of Burgundy hence shows a transformation of contemporary perceptions regarding laywomen`s reading practices. The background scene outside the window depicts the interior space of the sanctuary, where Margaret of York, the commissioner of the book, prays together with attendants to the Virgin Mary. The whole page seems to implicitly represent a kind of domestic vertical reading community rather than simply a female reading community. The marginal images of the Hours of Mary of Burgundy also have their own cultural meanings. The layout and marginal ornaments in medieval manuscripts especially have an intimate relation with the memory techniques. Specifically, the bird images illustrated throughout the margins of the Hours of Mary of Burgundy portray a metaphor for memory. In other words, the marginal bird images urge the laypeople for the memorial reading as well as the memorized reading of the illustrated prayer book in Latin.
