본 연구에서는 정서표현양가성의 두 가지 하위차원인 자기방어적 양가성과 관계관여적 양가성을 구분하여 이들이 우울에 미치는 상대적 영향을 조사하였다. 또한 자기방어적 양가성과 관계관여적 양가성이 우울에 미치는 영향에서 전위공격성이 매개역할을 하는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 서울과 수도권에 거주하는 252명의 성인을 대상으로 설문 조사를 실시하였고, 수집된 자료는 구조방정식 모형을 통해 검증하였다. 그 결과, 자기방어적 양가성은 직접적으로 높은 수준의 우울에 영향을 미칠 뿐만 아니라 전위공격성을 높이는 기제를 통해 간접적으로도 우울에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 반해 관계관여적 양가성의 경우 우울에 대한 직접 효과는 보이지 않았으나 전위공격성을 낮춤으로써 간접적으로 낮은 수준의 우울과 관련이 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 자기방어적 양가성은 전위공격성을 높여 우울 수준을 높이지만 관계관여적 양가성은 전위공격성을 낮춰 우울수준을 감소시킴을 시사한다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 자기방어적 양가성과 관계관여적 양가성의 차이와 그 원인에 대해 논의하고, 본 연구의 상담에 대한 시사점 그리고 제한점 및 후속 연구에 대한 제안에 대해 논의하였다.

The present study investigated the relative influence of two factors of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness (self-defensive and relationship-involved ambivalence) on depression. In addition, we examined whether displaced aggression mediated the relationship between self-defensive ambivalence and depression as well as relationship-involved ambivalence and depression. A total of 252 employed adults who lived in Seoul and metropolitan area participated in the survey. Structural-equation modeling analysis revealed that self-defensive ambivalence was directly associated with high levels of depression and was also indirectly related to increased depression through increased displaced aggression. In contrast, relationship-involved ambivalence was not directly associated with depression, but was indirectly related to decreased depression via decreased displaced aggression. These findings suggest that self-defensive ambivalence could increase depression while relationship-involved ambivalence is associated with decreased depression. Based on these results, we discussed the difference between self-defensive and relationship-involved ambivalence as well as implications for counseling, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research were discussed.
