본 연구는 한국프로야구계의 지각변동을 일으킨 현대 유니콘스의 창단과정과 활동을 통해 그들이 한국프로야구 발전에 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤는지 살펴보았다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현대는 한국프로야구 팀을 창단하려고 하지만 기존 구단들의 반대에 부딪혀 실업야구팀 현대 피닉스를 창단한다. 현대피닉스를 창단하는 과정에서 막대한 자금력을 바탕으로 유망주선수들을 대거 스카우트한다. 이후 아마야구계를 점령한 현대는 야구계의 새로운 실력자로 나서게 된다. 둘째, 현대는 태평양 돌핀스를 인수해 프로야구팀 현대 유니콘스를 창단했다. 현대 유니콘스는 선수들과 코치들에게 타구단에 비해 연봉과 복지까지 최고의 대우를 해줬다. 그리고 현대는 프로야구단을 운영하는 영업능력과 경쟁력이 다른 구단과는 차별화 되어 있었다. 셋째, 현대 유니콘스는 막대한 자금을 이용해 IMF로 재정 위기를 맞은 중소구단과 현금트레이드를 통해 전력보강을 해서 창단한지 3년 만에 한국시리즈를 재패하며 인천연고 사상 최초의 우승팀으로 인천야구사에 새장을 열었다.

Through the foundation process and activities of Hyundai Unicorns causing upheaval in the professional baseball world of Korea, this study examined its influence on the development of Korean professional baseball. The results are like following. First, even though Hyundai aimed to found a Korean professional baseball team, it founded a business baseball team, Hyundai Phoenix due to the existing clubs’ opposition. In the process of founding Hyundai Phoenix, many promising players were scouted based on its huge financial power. After that, Hyundai occupying the amateur baseball world accomplished its expected goal as professional baseball, and then appeared as a new power in the baseball world. Second, taking over Pacific Dolphins, Hyundai founded Hyundai Unicorns. Hyundai Unicorns provided the best treatment like annual salary and welfare with players and coaches. The business ability and competitiveness of Hyundai Professional Baseball Team were differentiated from other clubs. Third, reinforcing its strength through the cash trade with a small club in financial crisis caused by IMF based on its huge financial power, Hyundai conquered Korean Series within three years, and also opened a new chapter in the history of Incheon Baseball as the first winning team originated from Incheon.
