이 글의 목적은 여관의 역사적 변화과정을 섹슈얼리티라는 렌즈를 통해 살펴보고자 함이다. 한국의 여관은 포스트/식민, 가부장적 발전국가, 후기근대사회를 관통하면서 섹슈얼리티에 관한 사회문화적 의식과 정책들(법과 권력의 장치들), 주체들(사용자와 업주들)이 끊임없이 경합하는 가운데, 여인숙, 여관, 장급여관, 모텔, 러브호텔, 부티크 모텔 등으로 변모해 왔다. 특히 ``불온한`` 성애화된 공간으로서 여관이 변화하는 과정은 당대의 사회문화, 정치경제적 배경과 무관하지 않으며, 주체들의 성적 실천양상과 분리되기 어렵다. 결론적으로 한국의 여관은 공적/사적공간의 구분, 장소와 비-장소, 공간의 젠더화와 위계화, 밤/낮의 시간, 포스트/식민, 전통/근대/탈근대가 중층적으로 배태되고 전치되는 공간이자, 공적으로 합의된 가정으로서의 ``성적이라는 것``이 생산되고 균열되며 재구성되는 장이다. 흥미로운 점은 ``러브모텔``을 구성하는 섹슈얼리티의 공간적 실천은 공/사적 공간, 밤/낮의 시간을 이중적으로 위반하며 섹스-젠더-섹슈얼리티(이성애)의 선형적 배치란 애초에 ``불가능하다는 사실``을 폭로한다는 점이다. 이러한 사실은 시간과 공간, 주체가 상호작용하는 성적 욕망의 구체적인 실천양상이 페미니스트 관점에서 보다 심도 있게 연구될 필요성을 요청한다.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the historical changes of Korean inn (motel or love hotel), as tracing socio-historical deployment of spatialized sexual desires from a feminist perspective. Throughout colonial modernity, patriarchal national development, and postmodernity, the socio-cultural meaning of Korean ``motel`` has been constructed and reconstructed by interactions of subjects to experience the space, normative idea of sexuality, and regulatory devices of law. As regarded as a necessary night-time scape, Korean motel has long been understood as a place of immoral, abnormal, and deviant. However, transgressive sexual pleasure without reproduction, reversed day/night, public/private embedded in spatialized practices in ``love hotel`` ironically reveal the impossibility of lineal relationship of sex-gender-sexuality based upon the modern notions of time and space, public and private, and gender and sexuality. Therefore, Korean love hotel as contesting non-place and real-place interestingly naturalize normative heterosexuality and disclose its failure at the same time, where feminist interrogation as well as intervention on spatial intimate practices is asked for.
