< 병인도병록 >은 퇴계의 노년에 이루어진 여정에서 창작된 시들을 묶은 기행 시집이다. 안동에 거주하고 있던 퇴계는 명종의 부름을 받아 조정으로 향했다. 약 두 달 간 지속된 여정 속에서 퇴계는 꾸준히 병을 앓았다. 퇴계는 수차례 사장(辭狀)을 올려 여정을 중단하고자 했으나 받아들여지지 않았다. 결국 퇴계가 네번째 사장을 올리고 윤허를 기다리지 않은 채 귀가함으로써 여정은 끝을 맺었다. < 병인도병록 >에 실려 있는 시에는 출발 이후 여러 지역을 거쳐 다시 안동으로 돌아오기까지 퇴계가 품었던 생각과 감정들이 진솔하게 표현되어 있다. 심신의 고통을 겪는 중에 창작된 시들이기 때문에, 기행시임에도 새로운 경험에 대한 내용보다는 시인의 내면을 읊은 시들이 주를 이룬다. < 병인도병록 >의 시에는 지나온 삶에 대한 퇴계의 생각과 추구하고자 하는 삶의 모습이 표현되어 있다. 명예를 추구하는 삶과 학문을 탐구하는 삶이 서로 대비되면서 명예는 헛되고 경계해야 할 것으로, 학문은 끊임없이 희구하는 대상으로 나타나 있다. 또한 정서적으로는 고독감과 비애감이 자주 표출되고 있는데, 이로부터 벗어나게 하고 긍정적인 감정을 불러일으키는 것은 자연으로부터의 감흥이다. 계절이 봄으로 전환되어 가며 생동하는 자연의 풍경으로부터 퇴계는 위안과 기쁨을 얻었으며, 자연물과 깊은 교감을 나누었다. < 병인도병록 >에는 노년의 퇴계가 겪었던 내적 갈등과, 그가 선택하고 지향했던 삶의 가치가 무엇이었는지 또렷하게 나타나 있다.

〈 Byeongindobyeongrok 〉is a collection of poems that Toegye made in his old-age while he traveled. Toegye who lived in Andong, has been called by King Myeongjong. So he went to the royal court. During the journey of two months, he constantly suffered from an illness. Toegye submitted resignations several times to stop the journey but it wasn’t accepted at all. In the end, the way to the royal court was over without royal permission by submission of his forth resignation. Poetry, 〈 Byeongindobyeongrok 〉, shows all his thoughts and emotions from the start through several areas until the end of the journey to return to Andong. Even though it is travel poetry, contents are more focused on the inner side of poet than new experiences because these poetries were made while he suffered illness. Poetry in the 〈 Byeongindobyeongrok 〉 are well expressed about thoughts of life gone by Toegye and his pursuing life. Pursuing the honor and the study are contrast to each other in the 〈 Byeongindobyeongrok 〉. It explained that the honor is meaningless and it should be vigilant but the study shown as the objects of desire that he has to keep exploring. Also, the emotional loneliness and sorrow were frequently expressed in the 〈 Byeongindobyeongrok 〉. It says that the positive feeling of inspiration from nature is the way to deviate from these emotions. Toegye has earned the joy and consolation from the natural landscape and changes in the vibrant of spring, and he communes with natural object. The 〈 Byeongindobyeongrok 〉shows inner conflicts that he experienced in old age, also clearly shows value of the life he had chosen and directed.
