This study used literature reviews, cosmetics advertisements, and articles in fashion magazines for women to comparatively analyze how the body makeup patterns and society images were changing in postwar Korea and Japan. In the 1960s, traditional Korean reorganization of makeup had not yet changed. In the 1970s, people started to regard makeup as an important part of fashion. In the 1980s, makeup became generalized and popularized. In the 1990s, people’s life-style became more personalized and therefore makeup became more personalized as well. In the 2000s, the Korean style of natural makeup became a worldwide trend and was coupled with a trend towards regression to naturalism. In Japan in the 1960s, makeup had already started to be recognized as an effective tool to express one’s personality. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Japanese rejected Western culture and started to revalue traditional Japanese sense of beauty instead of the standardized Western one. In the 1990s, makeup became more subdivided and diversified. In the 2000s, makeup with emphasized eyes and “cute” makeup became popular in Japan. Korean makeup culture was strongly influenced by the Western and Japanese ones for a while after the war, however, in the 21st century the Korean style of natural makeup became one of the major makeup styles in Japan as a result of the Korean wave and had a considerable impact on the Japanese beauty industry.
