이 논문은 하이퍼히스토리에 대한 플로리디의 주장을 중심으로, 디지털 정보혁명의 정체가 무엇인지를 이해할 수 있는 한 가지 프레임을 모색하고자 한다. 지금 일어나고 있는 변화는 4차 산업혁명이란 말이 나타내는 생산양식이나 정치경제적 수준의 변화보다 훨씬 더 근본적인 수준의 변화이다. 이는 우리의 삶의 형식(form of life) 전체를 뒤바꾸는 변화로서, 우리가 경험하고 살아가는 생활세계 자체의 급격한 변동을 동반할 뿐 아니라, 현재의 생활세계에 적용되는 많은 개념적 범주나 그것과 연관된 판단들이 더 이상 유효하지 않음을 의미한다. 특히 주목해야 할 변화 중의 하나는 디지털의 정보 가소성(malleability)에 의해 가능하게 된 자율적인 인공 행위자(artificial agent)의 등장이다. 인간으로부터 독립하여 스스로 판단, 선택하고 행동하는 인공적 존재의 등장은 도덕적 존재와 비-도덕적(non-moral) 존재 혹은 도덕적 행위자와 피동자(patient)의 오래 된 구분이나 인과적 책임 중심의도덕 판단 등과 같이 우리의 일상에서 너무나 익숙하게 작동하고 있는 개념이나 원리들의 갱신을 요구한다. 이 논문에서 우리는 플로리디(Luciano Floridi)가 제안하는 정보윤리(Information Ethics)의 입장을 소개함으로써 그러한 갱신에 대한 한가지 제안을 살펴볼 것이다.

In this paper, I address to the question how information and communication technologies (ICT) are changing the world we live in and the way we are interacting with it. I think the changes caused by the so-called information revolution is more radical than what people usually think about it, in the sense that they are changing our forms of life entirely in a very fundamental level. It is not mere 4th industrial revolution. It is more than that. I characterize it, a la Floridi, as a beginning of Hyperhistorical Age. Digital revolution which lead us to the era of hyperhistory has been made possible by information-malleability of digital code. The most prominent phenomenon of hyperhistory is the appearance of autonomous artificial agents. Autonomous artificial agent invites us to renew the categorical distinctions on which we used to rely in understanding ourselves, the world, and relations to others. Among them are the distinctions between moral being and amoral/non-moral being, moral agent and patient, and the concept of responsibility. I will introduce Floridi’s Information Ethics as an attempt to renew the framework through which we conceptualize our ethical situation.
