이 글은 영남문화연구원의 영남문학 연구 현황을 점검하고 향후 나아갈 방향을 제시해 본 것이다. 이를 위해 학계의 영남문학 연구 현황과 대비 고찰하는 방법을 사용하였다. 먼저 학계의 영남문학 연구 현황을 구비문학, 고전시가 및 고전소설, 한문학 분야로 나누어 살펴보았다. 구비문학 분야에서는 인물전설, 서사민요, 동해안무가, 탈놀이 등이 주목되었다. 고전시가에서는 조선전기 사대부 시가와 조선후기 규방가사가, 그리고 고전소설에서는 작가와 작품배경 및 유통양상등에 연구의 초점이 맞추어졌다. 한문학의 경우 퇴계학, 남명학, 강안학, 산수문학 등이 특히 주목을 받은 분야라 할 수 있다. 다음으로 학계의 영남문학 연구 현황을 영남문화연구원의 영남문학 연구 현황과 견주어 보았다. 그 결과 영남문화연구원의 영남문학 연구 현황은 학계의 영남문학 연구 성과에 크게 못 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 향후 큰 분발이 요청된다 하겠는데, 이를 위해 집중해야 할 방향으로 구비문학 분야에서는 서사민요, 고전시가 및 고전소설 분야에서는 규방가사와 소설 유통, 한문학 분야에서는 강안학과 산수문학이 적합할 것으로 제시해 보았다.

The purposes of this study were to check the current research state of Yeongnam literature at the Youngnam Culture Institute and propose its future directions by comparing it with that of academic circles. The study first categorized the current research state of Yeongnam literature in the academia into oral literature, classical poems and novels, and Chinese literature. In the area of oral literature, the focus was on legends of figures, narrative folksongs, shamanistic songs of East Coast, and mask play. In the area of classical poems, the focus was on the poems of noblemen in the former half of Joseon and the Gyubanggasa in the latter half of Joseon. In the area of classical novels, the research focus was on the writers, backgrounds of works, and patterns of distributions. Finally in the area of Chinese literature, the focus was especially on Toigye studies, Nammyeong studies, Gangan studies, and landscape literature. The study then compared the current research state of Yeongnam literature in the academic circles with that of Youngnam Culture Institute and found that the latter lagged far behind the former in research achievements. The institute is thus required to make more strenuous efforts in the future, and the study proposed its directions of focus in such efforts including narrative folksongs in oral literature, Gyubanggasa in classical poems, distribution of novels in classical novels, and Gangan studies and landscape literature in Chinese literature.
