본 연구는 공교육 체계 내 기독교사립학교에서 근무하는 교목의 역할과 지원방향성에 대해 연구하는 논문이다. 본 연구는 연구방법론적으로 교목의 역할에 대한 문헌고찰과 지원방향성에 대한 인터뷰 결과를 다룬 통합연구이다. 한국의 교육구조는 서구 유럽이나 미국과 달리 톡특한 측면을 지니고 있다. 한국의 공교육 내에는 국공립학교와 사립학교를 모두 포함하고 일부 정부인가 대안학교까지 포함하고 있다. 공교육의 가장 큰 특징은 교육의 공공성과 평등성을 강조하는 것이다. 이러한 국가의 교육 체계 속에서 기독교 사립학교가 가진 종교적 지향성과 자율성이 대립하여 오랫동안 긴장관계를 이어왔다. 일반적으로 한국의 공교육 체계 내에서의 기독교교육은 크게 세 시대로 구분할 수 있는데 신앙교육의 시대, 종교교육의 시대, 종교학교육의 시대가 그것이다. 최근에 종교학교육의 시대가 되면서 기독교사립학교에서의 신앙교육이 제도적으로 위축되고 있는 현실에 있다. 이러한 현실에서 기독교사립학교에서 근무하는 교목의 역할은 매우 중요하다. 문헌연구 결과 전통적으로 교목은 첫째 예배와 성경공부를 통한 기독교적 가치관 교육, 둘째 불신자 학생 및 교직원들에 대한 선교, 셋째 학생들에 대한 상담 및 복지, 넷째 지역교회와 학교의 연계를 통한 신앙 네트워크 구축을 담당하는 역할을 해왔다. 교목에 대한 지원방향성에 대한 인터뷰 분석 결과 다음과 같이 네 가지로 기독교교육적 제언을 하였다. 첫째, 기독교사립학교의 정체성을 지키고 효과적인 복음전도를 위해서 교목에 대한 재교육 과정의 신설이 필요하다. 둘째, 교목을 위한 상담역량 강화 프로그램의 개설 및 지원이 필요하다. 셋째, 교목의 학생복지 활동을 위한 제도적, 경제적 지원이 필요하다. 넷째, 교목의 자유로운 기독교적 활동을 위한 제도적 지원이 필요하다. 국가의 공공성 정책과 제도적 규제가 점점 더 심해지고 있는 오늘날 기독교사립학교에서의 교목의 역할은 더욱 증대될 것이며 현실적인 지원이 이루어져야 할 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to review the critical roles of school chaplains and to rethink the direction of support for them. This study, methodologically, utilized literature analysis to review the roles of school chaplains and qualitative research method, interview to draw a direction of effective supports for school chaplains. Education system in Korea differs from Europe or North America’s one in terms of its system. Public education in Korea includes public schools, private schools, and some approved alternative schools. One of the important characters of public education is to emphasize publicity and equality in education. However, Christian private schools founded on the basis of biblical perspective emphasize its religious values and autonomy. In this reason, there has been critical tensions in the ministry of education and individual Christian private schools. Generally, Christian education in public education system could be divided into three stages: a stage of faith education, a stage of religious education, a stage of science of religion education. Teaching Christian faith for students in the public education system is getting hard in the era of science of religion education. According to literature review regarding the roles of school chaplains, they lead worship service and teach Bible to their students and teachers. They evangelize unchurched students and teachers. They counsel and support their students. They create network system with local churches around schools in order to effectively support their students. Based on the results of interviews, the researcher suggested four implications. First, a reeducation course for school chaplains is necessary in order to effectively teach the Bible to students. Second, open a counseling program is needed. Third, a support for student welfare through the work of a school chaplains is necessary. Fourth, an administrative and institutional support for unconstrained ministry of school chaplains is necessary.
