본고는 『택리지』의 저술의식이 두드러지는 「총론」, 「사민총론」, 「복거총론」의 「인심」조·「생리」조를, ‘사대부’라는 키워드에 주목하여 독해를 시도한 결과물이 다. 이러한 독법을 시도한 것은, 지금까지 밝히지 못한 『택리지』의 전체 구성과 논리를 발견할 수 있으리라 기대했기 때문이다. 「총론」을 ‘사대부’라는 키워드로 읽을 때, 이중환의 조선 사대부 사회에 대한 인식과 역사의 흐름에 따른 그의 고민을 발견할 수 있다. 그는 조선의 역사성과 특수성을 들어 구성원의 혈통적 하자에도 조선 사회를 사대부 사회로 인정하고 자부심을 가졌다. 그러나 「인심」조에서 보이듯 그는 당쟁의 격화와 그에 따른 폐해로 사대 부로서의 존재 방식과 자존감을 유지할 수 없는 상황에 처하자, 자괴감과 환멸을 느끼며 사대부 사회를 이탈하여 농업·공업·상업에 종사할 것을 제안하는 데 이르렀다. 그가 이러한 방식의 삶을 제안한 것은, 조선 전역에 만연한 당쟁의 해악을 고 발하고자 함이기도 했다. 「사민총론」과 「생리」조는 사대부의 경제 활동에 대한 텍스트이다. 「사민총론」을 사대부라는 키워드로 읽을 때, 그동안의 연구에서 밝혀지지 않은 진면목을 발견할수 있다. 「사민총론」은 기존의 연구처럼 평등사회를 주장한 글이 아니라, 사대부의 경제 활동의 정당성을 논증한 글인 것이다. 그는 사대부의 원류 고찰을 통해 사대부 의 경제 활동의 정당성을 획득하였는데, 이러한 논증은 그가 제시한 삶의 방식을 사대부들에게 납득시키기 위해 반드시 필요한 과정이었다. 「생리」조는 사대부의 경제 활동의 구체적인 내용을 담고 있다. 이중환은 농업과 상업에 대해 깊은 이해를보여주며, 「생리」조의 곳곳에 사대부의 경제 활동의 정당성을 피력하고 경제 활동의 범위를 설정하고 있는데, 그 범위를 사대부로서의 정체성 유지로 분명히 선을 긋고 있다. 『택리지』의 경제론은 어디까지나, 살 곳을 찾아야 하는 사대부를 위해 사대부의 입장에서 쓴 경제 활동 지침이라고 할 수 있다. 이중환이 『택리지』를 저술한 문제의식은 당쟁으로 인한 사대부로서의 자존감 상실에 의해 촉발된 것이며, 그가 개진한 삶의 방식과 경제론은 사대부로서의 정체성 유지라는 목표 위에 성립되어 있는 것이었다. 『택리지』 전편에는 ‘사대부’라는 키워드가 시종일관 관통하고 있는 것이다. 지리지로서의 『택리지』의 핵심 키워드가 ‘가거처’라면, 이중환의 저술의식에 있어서의 핵심 키워드는 ‘사대부’라고 하겠다.

This thesis is a result of trying to read Humaneness(人心) stanza·Making a profit(生利) stanza of General theory of Taengniji(總論), General theory of four kinds(四民總論), General theory of taking residence(卜居總論), that writing consciousness of T``aengniji(擇里志) is outstanding, by focusing on keyword, ``sadaebu(士大夫)``. The reading method was tried because they expected to discover the whole organization and logic of T``aengniji, which were not discovered until now. If reading General theory of T``aengniji by keyword of ``sadaebu``, Yi Chunghwan(李重煥)``s awareness about Choson sadaebu society and worries about the historic stream can be discovered. He recognized Choson society as sadaebu society due to historicity and speciality of Choson in spite of blood flaw and was proud of the society. However, like Humaneness stanza, he couldn``t maintain existing method and pride as a sadaebu because of the intensification of party conflicts and the damages. So, he felt sense of shame and disillusionment and suggested to work in agricultural, industrial, commercial area by getting out of the sadaebu society. He suggested the life so as to report the mischief of party conflicts in the whole Choson. General theory of four kinds and Making a profit stanzas are the texts about economic activities of sadaebu. If reading General theory of four kinds by keyword of sadaebu, true characters which were not discovered until now can be found. General theory of four kinds is logical insist on legitimity of sadaebu``s economic activities, not egalitarian society like existing studies. He acquired legitimity of sadaebu``s economic activities through the consideration of sadaebu``s original stream. The logic verification was necessary to persuade the living method he suggested to sadaebu. Making a profit stanza includes concrete contents of sadaebu``s economic activities. Yi Chunghwan shows deep understanding of agricultural and commercial industry, but in the middle of Making a profit stanza, he insisted legitimity of sadaebu``s economic activities and clarifies the range of economic activities as the maintainment of sadaebu``s legitimity. Economic theory of T``aengniji can be guidance of economic activities written from an angle of sadaebu for sadaebu who must find the place to live. The critical sense Yi Chunghwan wrote T``aengniji was originated from the loss of sadaebu``s pride and living method and economic theory, he developed, were established on the goal to maintain identity of sadaebu. In the whole volumes of T``aengniji, keyword of ``sadaebu`` is constantly existing. If keyword of T``aengniji as a geographical book is ``liveable place(可居處)``, keyword of Yi Chunghwan``s writing consciousness is ``sadaebu``.
