빈곤과 노화는 노년기 삶의 질을 저하시키는 요인이며, 우울증이라는 질환으로 나타나기도 한다. 본 논문은 노인우울에 영향을 미치는 사회·경제적 요인 중 특히 주거비 부담과 연령별 남녀 우울정도의 차이를 중점적으로 분석하여 정책적 시사점을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 한국복지패널자료 중 2007년에 65세 이상인 노인 2,235명을 대상으로 8년간의 균형 패널데이터를 구성하여 분석을 시행하였다. 특히 본 연구에서는 우울수준과 일부 변수의 내생성을 고려하기 위해 Hausman-Taylor 모형을 활용하였다. 주요 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경제적 부담인 주거비용 즉, 월세 부담이 높을수록 노인의 우울 정도가 높은것으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 남성보다 여성이 대체로 더 우울했으나, 연령이 증가함에 따라 그 격차는 좁아지는 것으로 나타났다. 이 밖에, 노인의 사회적 활동수준이 높을수록 우울 정도가 낮아지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 고령세대의 삶의 질을 제고시키기 위해서는 자원봉사활동이나 취업 기회가 확대되고, 최소한의 주거안정을 위한 주택 및 소득 지원정책이 필요함을 시사한다. 또한, 고령자의 연령과 성별에 따라 맞춤형 노인복지정책이 마련되어야 할 것이다.

Poverty and ageing are factors degrading the quality of life of older generations, and it may appear as a disease called depression. The purpose of this paper is to explore socioeconomic factors of depression among the elderly, especially focused on the effect of the house rent and the age-specific gap between male and female. We used the balanced panel data of Korea Welfare Panel Study Data from 2007 to 2014 in order to examine depression of 2,235 individuals aged 65 and over. The Hausman-Taylor model was applied for a consideration of endogeneity problem among depression and some factors. The main findings are as follows. The socially active old people are less likely to suffer depression. The higher economic burden including the monthly house rent makes them to be in deeper depression. Although the women tend to be more depressed than the men on average, the depression gap is decreased as time goes on. These findings imply that social welfare programs for older adults would help them involve the social activities such as a volunteer work and a job more easily. Furthermore, a more delicate policy design for senior housing and income is required.
