Introduction: Public access defibrillation (PAD) is considered to be essential for successful resuscitation of sudden cardiac death caused by ventricular fibrillation. However, recent studies claim that thoughtful and careful evaluation of available resources should be required to successful implementation. Material & Methods: The organizations which own automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the metropolitan city of Busan were contacted and the people in charge of the AEDs were interviewed in person. AEDs placed in the medical facilities and ambulances were excluded. Results: A total of 206 public access defibrillators were included for analyses. The location of the AEDs are listed in the table 1. The median days of installation was 5777. Among these AEDs, 107 (51.9%) were installed by legal obligation. The status of maintenance were as follows: 205 (99.5) were able to boot up; 204 (99.0) had defibrillation pad within the expiration date; 177 (85.9%) were inspected at least monthly. Only 18 (8.7%) of the AEDs had been used in real resuscitation episodes, and total number of CPR cases with the PADs were 14. The result corresponds to 1 case per 30 years. Conclusion: Guidelines suggest that PADs should be located where at least 1 arrest would occur within 3~5 years. Current status of PAD program in Busan area have very limited effectiveness comparing to American or European guidelines.
