국악은 우리 조상에게서 물려받은 고유한 전통문화임으로 문화유산을 아끼고 보전함과 동시에 우리음악을 다음 세대에 계승 발전시켜야 하는 측면에서 매우 중요하다. 학교 국악수업은 우리 민족의 얼과정서가 녹아 있는 국악 수업활동을 통하여 학생들에게 바람직한 정서 함양에 많은 영향을 끼친다. 이에 본 연구는 중학교 국악수업에 관한 연구동향을 포괄적으로 조망하고 향후 연구 과제를 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 국악수업에 관한 국내 석·박사 학위논문과 학술지 논문, 연구보고서 총 49편을 분석하였다. 그리고 국악수업에 관해 3가지 연구유형인 이론적 연구, 양적 연구, 질적 연구와 4가지 연구주제인 음악과 국악교육과정 연구, 국악수업 지도 연구, 국악수업을 위한 평가 연구, 기타 연구로 구분하여 연구동향을 조망하였다. 중학교 국악수업에 관한 국악교육 관련 연구동향의 분석 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국악수업의 다양한 지도방안 및 수업방법에 관한 연구가 있었지만 대부분 이론적 연구와 양적연구를 중심으로 수행되었다. 둘째, 연구자 입장에서 국악수업 지도 방안 중심으로 연구가 치중되었으며 적용 및 실행에 있어 미비함을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 국악수업에 있어서 학생과의 실제적 상호작용 현장 중심 연구가 부족하였다. 그러므로 향후 중학교 국악수업에 관한 연구 과제로는 연구방법론의 다양화, 실천에 관한 현장 실행 체계 연구 등이 필요함을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 본고에서는 중학교 국악수업에 관한 연구에서 국악수업 지도 방법이 이론적 연구, 양적 연구가 아닌 경험과 사례를 바탕으로 한 질적 연구의 필요성에 관한 연구방법을 제시하고자 한다.

Teaching Korean Traditional Music is so important in terms of maintaining well preservation of inherited traditional culture from ancestor as well as upholding and handing over our traditional music to the next generation. The purpose of this study was to examine the trend of the practice of Korean traditional music teaching in middle school music education, and to propose directions for further studies based on the analysis. For this end, forty-nine master``s and doctoral theses and academic articles were analyzed. In addition, the direction of researches related to Korean traditional music education was looked into three kind of formulated study, theoretical, quantitative and qualitative aspects, and four kind of studying theme, the curriculum of traditional music, instruction of lesson, appraisal for lesson and others. The findings in this study are summed up as follows. First, the past studies have been focused mainly on theoretical and quantitative research nonetheless there have been diverse teaching methodology and method in class. Secondly, most studies have been weighed on the study of instruction method of traditional music in respect of researcher``s own aspect rather than the study of application and implementation. Third, there have been less studies about on-site correlation between teacher and student in lessens. Based on this findings in the study, it could be realized that the diverse methodology in study and schematic in-site study on the practice was imperative as the subject of future-oriented study for practice of Korean traditional music at middle schools. Whereas, it is making sound suggestion about the requisition of the qualitative study based on the empirical and practical application, not on either a theoretical or quantitative study by which the contents and analyses as well as teaching methods have been prevalent in practice of Korean traditional music at middle schools.
