Research Articles : Middle School Science Teachers' Views on Teleological and Causal Explanations in Biology

This study surveyed the middle school science teachers` views on teleological and causal explanations of biological phenomena. $quot;two hundred teachers had been randomly sampled from Seoul and 151 of them answered to the questionnaire. Teachers had a position of organicism (85.5%) and agreed to vitalism (90.0%) in a sense that living things are different from non-living things. They were inclined to mechanism (74.0%) that living things are very complex machine, but opposed (89.3%) to the view that living things are regarded as machine. The 54.9% of science teachers considered that the teleological explanation is more scientific than the causal explanation, 33.1% of them considered that the causal explanation is more scientific than the teleological explanation, and the others considered both explanations to be scientific. In their classes, science teachers used more teleological explanations (58.4%) than causal explanations (41.6%). Especially, those who had short career of teaching, women, and graduates from college of education used more teleological explanations in their teaching.
