존 스타인벡(John Steinbeck)은 그의 첫 번째 부인 캐롤(Carol Henning Steinbeck)과 신화학자이자 그의 친구인 조셉 캠벨(Joseph Campbell)과의 연애 사건으로 인해 심한 충격을 받았고, 그 충격이 당시 그가 저술 중이던 『미지의 신께』(To a God Unknown)에 지대한 영향을 주게 된다. 이것에 대한 단서를 비교적 최근에 발간된 마이클 제롬 한슨(Michael J. Hanson)의 『몬트레이의 철학자들』(2010)에서 발견되어지고 있다. 이뿐만 아니라 필자는 이러한 전기적 사실이 평상시 스타인벡이 가지고 있던 범신론적 견해가 작가와 같은 연고지인 몬트레이 지역에 거주하던 생태시인 로빈슨 제퍼슨(Robert Jefferson)의 독특한 생태학적 사고 즉 비인간주의와 함께 『미지의 신께』의 작품배경이 되고 있기에 이 작품이 당시 비평가들에게 혼란스럽고 신비주의적인 인상을 주었음이라고 주장한다. 또한 이러한 사연들이 『몬트레이의 철학자들』에 등장하고 있는 실존 인물들보다 약 백 년을 앞선 유럽의 아르투어 쇼펜하우어(Arthur Schopenhauer)의 비이성주의를 공통으로 하고 있음은 매우 흥미로울 뿐만 아니라, 스타인벡은 물론 캠벨 그리고 리케츠에 이르는 미국에 영향을 준 위인들의 작품들을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 그리하여 필자는 『미지의 신께』의 저작 배경으로서 『몬트레이의 철학자들』에서 발견된 캐롤과 캠벨의 불륜적 관계를 본문에 의거하여 소개하고, 『미지의 신께』의 본문을 중심으로 자연적인 현상으로서의 인간의 섹슈얼리티가 가진 비이성성을 제퍼스의 생태학적 관점에서 해석하고자 한다. 마지막으로 필자는 이 연구를 통해서 그 동안 비평가들에 의해 하나의 습작품으로만 여겨졌던 『미지의 신께』가 그것이 가진 섹슈얼리티 주제를 통해 오히려 20세기 중반 미국에 풍미하던 비이성주의적 경향에 대한 거울이 되어주길 바라는 바이다.
The shock from the love affair between John Steinbeck` first wife Carol Henning Steinbeck and Steinbeck`s close friend and mythologist Joseph Campbell had an enormous effect on the Steinbeck`s work 『To a God Unknown』. This clue can be found in the comparatively newly published the book 『The Philosophers of Monterey』 (2010) by Michael J. Hanson. Also, Steinbeck`s pantheistic view and inhumanism, a unique ecological idea, made by the poet Robert Jefferson, who lived in the same region are the background of 『To a God Unknown』, which, I insist, made the critics at that time confused and gave them a subjective impression. These facts share Arthur Schopenhauer`s irrationalism that was about one hundred years prior to them who are in the 『The Philosophers of Monterey』, which is greatly interesting and also help to understand the works of great men in America, such as Steinbeck, Campbell and Ricketts. Given this, this study aims to introduce Carol and Campbell`s love affair based on the texts of 『The Philosophers of Monterey』 and explore Jeffers` inhumanism in light of prior studies. I will interpret the irrationalism of sexuality from the angle of Jeffers` ecology as a natural phenomenon centralized on the text of 『To a God Unknown』. Finally, I am expecting that this study will give an opportunity for 『To a God Unknown』 which has been regarded as just one of John Steinbecks` many practice stories by critics to be a mirror of irrationalism, a dominant trend of America in the mid-20th century, through its theme of sexuality.
