Although Christians and Marxists have had antagonistic relations, there have been some attempts at dialogue between Christianity and Marxism in the West. In the United States some clergy have been interested in Marxism and studied it for purpose of dialogue. Dialogue between Christians and Marxists was inspired between World Wars I and II by the Depression and concern over the rise of Fascism. In Korea there has been strong anti-communism in the South, while there has been strong anti-religious policy in the North. The Korean War of 1950-1953 hardened these divisions. Under this situation, there were no early dialogues between Christians and Marxists in South Korea. Anyone who proposed a dialogue with Marxism or communism, was regarded as pro-communist. They were declared to be anti-government and against the National Security Law. The South Korean government suppressed every attempt of dialogue. The result that there was no public dialogue between Christians and Marxists, reflected the Cold War mindset in South Korea. Nevertheless, there have been some attempts overseas of meetings for dialogue between North Koreans and overseas Korean Christians--Dialogue between North Korean, Overseas Koreans and Christians for Unification of the Fatherland(1981, 1982, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1991). Second, the WCC or other Christian bodies in foreign counties sponsored Christian Conferences with the North and South Korean Christians. Third, North and South Korean Christians directly met each other in foreign countries (Glion conference, 1986, 1988, 1990, (1995), Tokyo conference, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996). Since the 1990s there have been many visits to North Korea under the government``s permission. Particularly, many South Korean Christian ministers have personally visited North Korea, and they can invite North Korean churches leaders to South Korea. The chair of the Chosun Christians Federation for the first time visited the South in 2002. There are pros and cons to interchange between South Korean Christians and North Korean church leaders, much of which is related to prevailing anti-communist attitudes in the South. However, interchange may be a tool for reconciliation between the North and South and a means by which to prepare for reunification. It may help to build trust each other and contribute to the unity of the nation.
