롤스의 ≪정의론≫은 공동체주의자들에 의하여 많은 비판을 받았다. 비판의 핵심은 롤스가 사회적 자아에 근거를 두는 개인의 정체성을 무시하고 정의 이론을 수립하였다는 것이다. 롤스가 원자론적 자아에만 의존하지 않고 사회적 자아에도 의존하기 때문에 롤스의 이론에서 공동체주의적 가닥이 흐른다는 것을 밝히는 것이 이 논문의 핵심이다. 나아가서 자유주의가 공동체주의를 수용하는 경우에 고려하여야 할 것이 무엇인지에 대하여서도 다루고자 한다.

John Rawls’s theory on justice has been criticized by communitarians. The criticism has been mainly based upon the argument that Rawls has built up his theory, not upon the social self but upon the atomistic self through his neglecting the self’s dependence upon community. This article is to argue that this is not the case. A close scrutiny make us find a lot of communitarian strands in his text. Furthermore this article deals with the problem; how liberalists can accept the gists of communitarian critiques against liberal political theories if they want to complement the defects of liberalism.
