Middle School Student's Conceptual Change about Biological Concepts through Traditional Teaching and Learning

The purpose of this research is to investigate the student`s conceptual change about biological concepts through traditional teaching and learning in maddle School. to the study was conducted by giving pencil and paper test to 199 1st graders at the attached middle school to the College of Education, Chungbuk National University. This test was conducted two times; one tune before the class and the other after the class. Its major results are as follows: 1. Biological concepts of which the formation rate of the concept; were increased turned out to be ones on living thing, nonliving thing. plant arid animal: and higher than this are ones on mammal. bird, fish, reptile and amphibian, 2. The concepts of which the formation rate of the concepts is not actually changed turned out to he botanical ones such as flower plant, flowerless plant, monocotyledon and dicotyledon. These results appear to be the limitation of the traditional teaching and learning which stresses on the formation of concepts without paying any attention the process of observation. Therefore authors suggest that biology teachers do pay their special attention to the facts and features of plant to increase the formation rate of botanical concepts when they give the traditional classes.
