The purpose of this study is to develop a model case of collaborative project-based learning (PBL) between Korean and Japanese university students. The project was designed to help students develop their academic skills and to give them practical opportunities to use English. As a result of the project, three groups of students presented their research related to education and media at an international conference. The process that the project followed was analyzed with a special focus on students’ online collaboration, including the use of social media. Students used both synchronous and asynchronous tools for their collaboration. The project was generally considered a success; however, since this was only the first trial, many challenges remain to be overcome, especially in cases where students work collaboratively online with new group members who are not familiar with one another. On the basis of the analysis and of interviews conducted with the students, the authors clarify the nature and process of the students’ activities during the activity. Possible effects of the project and lessons that arise from it to help students collaborate better online are also discussed.
