The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the status of high school science of Kwangju City and Chollanamdo. Questionnaire, were mailed to 37 schools in Kwangju City and 91 in Chollanamdo, and a total of 59 schools of them responded. Two questionnaires. one for the science master teacher, and the other for a science teacher with different major area front the master teacher`s were responded for each school. The results of the survey were are follows: 1. The class size of most schools wars 40 to 55. 2. For the 1989, a half of the schools invested 1000 to 2000 won per student in purchasing laboratory facilities end instruments, and 1000 won err Less in purchasing experimental materials. 3. Most schools were equipped with ut least a laboratory, but the supplies of electricity and water were made by only 75% of the, schools and 56% respectively. 4. For science facilities most schools veers tar from the standard required by the Ministry of Education. 5. A half of the teachers taught 15 to 18 class hours a week. 6. Seventy-five percent of the teachers thought only one science area, and the others (25 percent) more than one science area. 7. Only 40 percent of the teachers responded as welt-prepared for laboratory teaching and science: evaluation. 8. Forty-six percent selected to develop students` inquiry stills as one of the criteria for textbook selection. 9. It was responded that the major barrier against inquiry instruction in high schools was the college-entrance-examination-focused education system and the second was the deficiency of experimental instruments and materials.
