The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the status of junior-high school science of Kwangju City and Chollanamdo. Questionnaires were mailed to 53 schools in Kwangju City and 150 in Chollanamdo, and 82 schools of them responded. The results of the survey were as follows: 1. The descending trend of the number of students was apparent in the region of Chollanamdo. 2. Forty-one percent of schools invested 500,000 won or less in purchasing laboratory facillities and instruments for the 1989, and 45 percent invested 300,000 wan or less in purchasing experimental materials. 3. For laboratories, most schools were equipped with, and for some science facilities, high percentages of possessions were reported. 4. In spice of the possession percentages of over 80 for computer, OHP, and VTR, the facilities were rarely used. 5. Fifty percent of the teachers taught 15 class hours or less for a week, and 66 percent taught all science areas including Physcis, Biology, Chemistry and Earth Science. 6. Only half the teachers responded as $quot;well-prepared`$quot; for each of the areas of science content, science teaching skill, laboratory experiment, classroom management and evaluation. 7. Over 50 percent of both 7 th- and, 8 th- grade science teachers reported that they had five or mare Laboratory experiments for the first semester of this year (1990). 8. About 50 percent of the teachers weighted practice with 30 up to 50 percent for science grading. 9. Seventy-three percent of the teachers thought students to he overloaded with science contents to be learned.
