Choon K. Kim and Nam K. Chang; Effect of the soil micro-organisms, temperature, moisture content and mineral salts on the decay rate of soil organic matter. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of microbial population, temperature, moisture content and mineral salts such as N, P, K, Ca and Mg added to the top soil on the decay rates of soil organic matter. The decay rate of soil organic matter was estimated by the measurements of the amount of CO₂ evolved from the soil organic matter. The decay rate of oak and pine forest soils were accelerate with the increasing temperature. It was also increased by the increasing number of soil microbial population, and the activity of fungi was much stronger than bacteria for the decomposition of soil organic matter. The optimum moisture contents of L, F, H, and A₁ horizon of oak forest soil for the decay of soil organic matter were 120, 150, 100 and 70 percent, and that of pine forest soil were 80, 90, 60 and 40 percent respectively. Among the mineral salts added to the top soil, nitrogen, phosphorus and magnessium except Ca, K, N-P, K-P have powerful effect on the decomposition of soil organic matters in oak and pine forests.
