머지않아 많은 숫자의 다문화 장병들이 군대에 입대할 것으로 예상된다. 이러한 변화에 능동적으로 대처하기 위해서는 군대 내에서의 다문화교육이 필요하다. 군대는 일반사회 조직과 달리 단체 생활이 이루어지기 때문에 다문화적 편견을 제거하는데 유리한 조건을 갖추고 있다. 그러나 적절한 다문화교육이 이행되지 않는다면 다문화 장병들이 차별과 고통을 겪을 위험도 더 크다. 그렇기 때문에 다문화 장병들의 다문화적 이해 수준을 높이기 위한 교육이 절실히 요구된다. 특히 내무생활과 교육훈련을 지휘·감독하는 지휘관들의 역할이 무엇보다 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 군대의 성공적인 다문화교육은 우리 군의 국제적 경쟁력을 강화시켜줄 뿐만 아니라, 다문화 장병들의 한국인으로서의 정체성을 확립하고 나아가 사회통합에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

In the near future, a lot of multicultural young people will join the military. It needs some efforts to prepare the demographic and cultural changes in the barracks. A group life which is typical feature of military is advantageous situation for removing multicultural prejudice but the same reason it might reinforce the multicultural military personnel`s distress. That is why we need multicultural education in the military, especially for the commanders who have responsibility for directing whole military personnels. A successful multicultural education in the military could make the Korean armed forces more competent in the international relations and to develop multicultural military personnel`s identity as Korean and eventually it could contribute to the integration of our society.
