1970년대 정주영은 다양한 방법으로 숙련기능공을 양성하였다. 또한 정주영은 이렇게 양성한 기능공을 1970년대 추진된 중화학공업화와 함께 자신이 창업한 수많은 회사에 취업시켜 안정된 직장을 제공했다. 이 연구는 1972년 창업하여 현재 중공업 분야에서 국제적인 경쟁력을 인정받고 있는 현대중공업에 1973년부터 1983년까지 취업한 기능공 20명을 조사하여 그들의 계층이동을 추적하였다. 이들을 대상으로 계층적 출신 배경, 임금 소득을 비롯한 제반 처우의 변화, 현재 소속된 계층적 배경을 분석한 결과 이들은 취업당시 중하층 혹은 하층 소속이었으나, 2015년 현재 최소한 핵심 중산층 혹은 심지어 상층에 소속되어 있음이 밝혀졌다. 이와 같은 분석 결과를 토대로 한국사회의 계층구조 변화 즉 중산층 사회의 등장에 기여한 정주영의 역할을 제시하였다.

In the 1970s, Chung Ju-Yung educated skilled workers in multiple ways and provided jobs for these workers in his own numerous companies, which were also products of rising heavy-chemical industry in Korea. This article traces the social mobility of twenty skilled workers who entered Hyundai Heavy Industries, which was established in 1972 and is highly recognized in the international market today, from 1973 to 1983. By analyzing their initial background, increase in their income, and their current status, this article concludes that the skilled workers started from a lower or lower-middle class and moved their way into middle or even upper class current day. Based on this result, this article presents the role of Chung Ju-Yung in the emergence of middle class in Korea’s social structure, which signifies the coming of modern developed Korea.
