이 연구는 학교 도덕과 교육과정에 내장된 민족교육과 다문화교육의 쟁점 주제를 비판적으로 검토하여 양자의 바람직한 조화 방안을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 고등학교 <생활과 윤리> 교과서들을 중심으로, 민족주의와 다문화주의의 담론이 구체적으로 어떻게 반영되어 있으며, 두 이념적 요소간의 상호 논리적 연관성을 갖추고 있는지 분석한다. 교과서 분석 결과, 교육과정의 지침에 따라 두 담론은 형식상 결합을 지향하지만 내용상 단원별 정합성이 부족하다. ‘다문화주의’ 와 ‘민족주의’에 대한 정의도 모호하다. ‘다문화 윤리’는 주로 ‘문화’의 관점에서, ‘민족 윤리’는 주로 ‘공동체’의 관점에서 추상적으로 접근하다보니, 통일한국과 다문화 사회통합을 추구하는 과정에서 해결해야 할 윤리적 문제가 간과될 뿐만 아니라 그 대척점에 있는 덕목과 양립하기 힘든 문제에 봉착한다. 향후 도덕과 교육 속에서 이들 주제가 서로 이론적인 정합성을 갖기 위해서는, ‘문화’, ‘종교’, ‘민족’ 등 본질적이고 귀속적인 특정 주제 중심으로 편제되기보다는 ‘인권’, ‘민주시민성’, ‘평화’ 등 가치를 중심으로 유기적으로 구성될 필요가 있다. 아울러 도덕과 교육은 보편윤리를 전제로 문화적 다원성과 사회적 통합성을 동시에 실현할 수 있는 주제를 정초해야 하는데 ‘다문화시민윤리’ 는 그러한 예 중 하나로 보인다.

This study examines the tendency of national and multicultural educational discourses embedded in Korea’s moral education at high school. It aims at drawing desirable compatibility between nationalism and multicuturalism in moral education of Korea that not only facing sociocultural diversity but also suffering from prolonged national division. In this purpose. it reviews the inconsistent factors of both nationalism and multiculturalism in moral education by analysing educational contents in the subject of ‘Life and Ethics.’ I argue that. for realizing consistency in moral education. the educational contents of multiculturalim and nationalism are needed to be designed by focusing on the universal values such as ‘human right’. ‘peace’. ‘democratic citizenship’. or ‘constructed identities’ rather than of ‘cultural’. ‘nation’. or ‘inherent identities’ that based on essential and ethic values. In conclusion. for Korea. the contents of national ethics and multucultural ethics could be harmonized in a field of ‘ethics of multicultural social integration’ in which the values of cultural diversity and social integration embedded compatibly.
