본 연구에서는 다문화 소설에서 소수집단의 언어환경과 정체성의 문제가 어떻게 그려지고 있는지 살펴보았다. 정인의 『타인과의 시간』, 이창래의 「영원한 이방인(Native Speaker)」이 대상 텍스트이다. Tse(1998)의 이주민의 민족적 정체성 발달과정의 4단계, 1) 미인지(unawareness), 2) 민족적 양가감정/회피(ethnic ambivalence/evasion), 3) 민족성 출현(ethnic emergence), 4) 민족 정체성 통합(ethnic identity incorporation)을 근거로 하여 대상 텍스트 등장인물이 어느 정도의 정체성 발달단계에 와 있는지 확인하였다. 대다수의 선행 연구들은 언어환경과 정체성이 밀접하게 관련되어 있고, 특히, 단순히 계승어를 구사할 수 있다는 것보다는 계승어에 유창한 정도가 정체성에 더 영향을 미친다고 주장하고 있다. 아울러 소수 집단이 자신의 집단을 보는 시각과 주류 사회가 소수 집단을 보는 관점도 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 「타인과의 시간」에서 베트남어를 폄하하는 주류사회는 남편과 어머니로 하여금 주류의 시각을 내면화하게 하고, 소수민족인 아내는 그로 인해 민족적 양가감정 단계를 지나 민족성 분출에 이르나 통합된 이중 문화 정체성에 이르지 못함을 보여준다. 미국을 배경으로 한 「영원한 이방인」은 견고한 주류사회의 편견 아래에서 역시 헨리가 민족적 양가감정 상태에 오래 고착되어 있었음을 보여주며 릴리아와 존 강을 통해서 비로소 헨리는 통합된 정체성 발달 단계로 나아가는 모습을 보여주고 있다.

The aim of this study is to inspect the relationship between the linguistic environment of the ethnic groups and their identity through the multicultural novels. Jung, In`s 「the time with others」 and Lee, Changrae-rae`s 「Native Speaker」 have been down for discussion. Tse(1998) has brought to the conclusion that ethnic identity development progresses under the four stages such as 1) unawareness, 2) ethnic ambivalence/evasion, 3) ethnic emergence, and 4) ethnic identity incorporation. Which stage the characters are at was searched based on these stages. The research was accomplished referring to the precedent studies, which mostly show that the heritage languages and ethnic identity are closely related. Furthermore, how much ethnic people are fluent in heritage languages plays a more important role for their positive ethnic identity rather than they are just able to speak heritage languages. What is more, not only the ethnic people`s view on their own ethnic groups, but also the mainstreamers` positive eyes on the ethnic groups affect considerably the identity of the ethnic groups. "The wife" in 「the time with others」 are thought to be staying at the stage 3) ethnic emergence, not being able to go further, and Henry in 「Native Speaker」 has troubled while staying at the stage 2) ethnic ambivalence until his adult ages, however, passing by stage 3) ethnic emergence, plowing his way to stage 4) ethnic identity incorportion with the help of Lilia and John Kang.
