This paper first studies the general meaning of the expression a “strong and prosperous nation” by looking at the primary sources from North Korea. It then assesses the functions and the limits of a strong and prosperous nation by categorizing them according to ideological and national strategic points of view. The results make a point regarding the political and policy tasks for Kim Jong Un. The strong and prosperous nation will serve as not only a symbol, but also a link between the eras of Kim Jong Il and Kim Jong Un. Even though Kim Jong Il, the one who coined the expression a “strong and prosperous nation,” has become mainly a subject of revolutionary history, an assessment about the strong and prosperous nation, a link between the father and the son, will be the cornerstone in analyzing the 17 years of the Kim Jong Il regime and for projecting the future of the new regime, as Kim Jong Un has been left with the task of achieving the strong and prosperous nation and opening a new chapter in revolutionary history. The result of this is that the proposition that has emerged to overcome the North’s crisis and suggest a new vision serves the functions of ideology and national strategy. As a result, the ideological function has worked smoothly; but there is the possibility of various obstacles as the Kim Jong Un era sets on a full course. Also, it is shown that there is discrepancy and discord between the goal setting and the reality in terms of national strategy.
