본 논의는 토끼전의 중심 서사가 言과 意의 관계를 중시해야 하는 작품임을 전제로 시작되었다. 특히 그 관계가 寓意(allegory)로 연결되어 있다는 점, 언어로 구현된 세계가 동물이 의인화된 세계라는 점에 주목하였다. 이와 동시에 언어로써 구현된 세계는 구현되기 이전의 세계와 결코 동일할 수 없다는 지점들에 착안하여 토끼전의 서사를 분석하였다. 텍스트 분석의 도구로서 라캉의 독법과 개념을 원용하였다. 그동안 토끼전은 전통적 서사 원리나 접근 방법을 통해 작품적 의의가 다각도로 이루어져왔으나 현대 비평이론을 적용하는 방식으로도 충분히 논의 가능성이 있다고 판단되었기 때문이다. 여기에는 토끼전의 서사가 우의의 방법으로 기술되었다는 점과 반복되는 과장과 거짓의 언사 이면에 진실의 폭로와 비판의 의도가 자리하고 있다는 점이 동기가 되었다. 라캉 이론의 개념과 독법은 난해하여 여전히 해석과 분석의 논란이 많기에 가장 기본적인 개념-시니피앙(signifiant), 상징계(Symbolic), 대타자(Autre/the Other), 욕망(Desire), 언표 주체-으로써 토끼전의 서사를 분석하였다. 라캉의 독법에 따르면 토끼전 서사는 시니피앙으로 구현된 상징계이며 여기에 존재하는 인물(토끼와 별주부, 용왕을 비롯한 수중, 육지 동물)은 인간 주체의 대타자로서 인간의 욕망을 드러내고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 토끼전 인물들이 벌이는 과장과 허세, 거짓의 말은 진실의 비틀린 표현으로 이해할 수 있다. 토끼전의 서사-이야기는 실상을 비틀어 구현함으로써 오히려 진실에 가까워지고 그러한 텍스트적 특성으로 진리를 욕망하는 독자의 공감을 획득할 수 있었다고 볼 수 있다. 향유층의 욕망을 대변하기 위한 토끼전은 다양한 이본이 형성될 수 있었다고 추측할 수 있다.
The central narrative of Tokki-jeon depends heavily on the relations between linguistic expressions and contents. In doing so, the narrative successfully uses allegory to show the personified world of animals in lingual representation. However, linguistic representation is not identical to pre-linguistic status. This essay focuses upon the discrepancy of the linguistic representations within the text in use of Jacque Lacan`s concepts. As a analytical tool of the text, Lacanian reading and concepts were used. Tokki-jeon has been analysed from traditional approaches and narrative rules. However, a psychoanalytic approach will be also beneficial to understand that repeated exaggerations and lies within the text/language accompany the subtle intention to expose and criticize truth The study mainly uses the Lacanian concepts of signifiant, the Symbolic, Autre/the Other, Desire, and subject of enunciation to analyze the narrative of Tokki-jeon. According to Lacan, Tokki-jeon represents the Symbolic constituted with signifants, and its inhabitants(rabbit, turtle, Dragon king, and other animals) are the Other(s) that reveal the human subject. Exaggeration, bluffs, and lies in the text should be understood as distorted expression of truth. The narrative of Tokki-jeon distorted reality to come close to desire and truth, thereby inducing the reader`s desire for truth. Since Tokki-jeon enables to show the reader’s desire, it produces diverse versions of the text.
