본 연구는 고려 시대 이전 한국에 중국에서 전래된 당악 춤이 있는지에 대한 것이다. 사실한국에서 기존의 학설에 의하면, 당악(唐樂) 춤의 전래는 고려시대 송(宋)에서 전래된 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나, 동시대 일본을 살펴보면, 일본 궁중에 한국에서 전래된 고려악(高麗樂)과함께 당악(唐樂) 춤들이 존재하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 일본 궁중춤의 전래에 대해 연구해 본다면, 혹 고대 한국에 당악(唐樂) 춤의 존재 가능성을 엿볼 수 있을 수도 있다. 일본의 역사서들은 일본의 궁중악무인 가가쿠(雅樂)가 그 시작부터 한국의 영향을 받고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 비록 한국과 일본의 역사서들이 직접 언급하고 있지 않지만, 이러한 기록들을 면밀히 조사해 보면 몇몇 당악(唐樂) 춤 작품들이 한국에서 건너왔음을 시사하고 있다. 이러한 고려악과 당악의 전래는 752년 일본 동대사에서 있었던 대불개안공양회에서 그 절정을 이루고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 기존학설과는 다르게 고대 한국에 파진악(破陣樂)과 같은 당악(唐樂) 춤의 존재했음을 짐작해 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 고대 한국 춤의 연구에서 있어 고대일본의 춤 연구는 매우 중요하다고 할 수 있으며, 마찬가지로 고대 일본 공연 예술 연구에도 한국의 춤 연구가 필수적임을 보여준다.

This research is animated by a curiosity about a possibility that Korea had the Chinese dance repertoires (tangak) before Koryo dynasty. In fact, most of researchers in Korea have assumed that Chinese dances in Korea were transmitted from China during Koryo dynasty. However, when we look at the Japanese court, many Chinese dance repertoires (togaku) as well as Korean dance repertoires (komagaku) from this period still exist. When we inquire the Japanese court dance, we may find the possibility that the Chinese dances existed in the ancient Korean kingdoms. Japanese historical records show that gagaku started as a result of Korean influence at the beginning of its history. Although Korean and Japanese official records often seem to ignore this fact, the Koreans must have introduced not only Korean dances but also some Chinese dances to Japan. One such result of the transmission is likely to have been the Buddha’s Eye-opening ceremony at Todaiji in 752. It suggests that ancient Korea should have the Chinese dance repertoires like Hajinraku. It may be an important discovery which overturns previous theories. In this sense, without investigating the Japanese court dance, ancient Korean dance remains surely hidden in a veil of mystery, and vice versa.
