대중화운동 이후 카프 작가들은 감정의 사회구성적 성격에 대해 새롭게 인식하게 된다. 감정은 일반적으로 사회자극에 대한 수동적 반응으로 인식되었지만, 대중화운동을 경과하면서 감정은 사회적 구성물로서 파악되었고, 대중화운동이 성공하기 위해서는 대중들의 생활 감정을 획득해야 한다고 여겼다. 이러한 상황에서 지식인들의 나약함과 소시민성은 극복해야 할 태도로서 간주되었다. 그런데 김남천은 이러한 카프 일반의 실천과 뚜렷하게 구분된다. 1930년대 초두의 ``물 논쟁``은 그가 쓴 『물』이라는 소설을 계기로 촉발되었는데, 그는 이 소설에서 육체를 매개로 한 감정을 전경화한다. 그가 육체를 통한 감정에 주목한 것은, 당대 카프 작품들의 최대 문제로 제기된 도식성을 극복하기 위해서였다. 도식성은 작품이 이념과 현실이 불일치한다는 것을 의미했다. 이는 단순히 해방의 의지를 강요한다고 해서 해결될 수 없는 문제였다. 김남천은 소설의 리얼리티를 확보하기 위해서는 바로 지금, 여기의 감정 자체를 소설적 주제로 삼아야 한다고 주장했다. 감정은 그것이 보편적이지만, 동시에 사회문화적 차이를 나타내기 때문이다. 이를 위해서 김남천은 감정을 인식대상으로 삼는, 새로운 주체의 위치로 이동한다. 그는 이를 ``실천``이라고 불렀는데, 그의 방법론은 변증법을 유물론적으로 해석한 마르크스의 방법론에 대한 깊은 이해에서 비롯한다.
