Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a common but destructive arthritis associated with psoriasis of the skin and/or nails. Although PsA was once described as a variant of rheumatoid arthritis, it recently has been included in the group of spondyloarthropathies. Dermatologists are in excellent position to diagnose PsA early, nevertheless those who lack expertise in PsA might miss an opportunity for preventing functional joint disability. The diagnosis of PsA, though still is a challenge, has usually been made based on characteristic arthritis features together with the absence of rheumatoid factor and the presence of psoriasis skin and nail lesions. Since there are no specific serologic tests to confirm PsA diagnosis, radiographs can also be helpful. The recent publication of simple and highly specific criteria - the classification criteria for psoriatic arthritis (CASPAR) - has been a move for the development for the diagnosis of PsA, which should be distinguished from ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In this presentation, I will include my personal experience in diagnosing psoriatic arthritis among patients with psoriasis, look at the clinical features and discuss about the screening tools.
