In this study, various herbal extracts were tested to replace the chemical preservatives in cosmetics. As the herbal plants, the root of Morus alba Bark, Schisandra chinensis and Scutellaria baicalensis were chosen. Morus alba Bark was extracted using 70% ethanol and Schisandra chinensis and Scutellaria baicalensis were extracted with 95% ethanol. The microorganisms used in the anti-microbial tests were Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus used for bacteria, Candida albicans used for yeast, and Aspergillus niger used for mold. The anti-microbial effect was carried out using broth culture method and preservative effect in cosmetics was tested using a formulation containing the same kinds of microorganisms. In the first step, the concentration of herbal plant extracts alone or mixture of them was determined through the broth culture method. The concentration of single or mixture of extracts was set to 0.5%, and the mixture chosen as Morus alba Bark 0.2% + Schisandra chinensis 0.1% + Scutellaria baicalensis 0.2%. In the second step, preservative activity of herbal extracts in cosmetics was carried out on the basis of the above experiments. According to the results, cosmetics containing 0.5% of a single extract showed a similar antibacterial activity to that of the cosmetics containing methyland propyl-paraben, while the cosmetics containing 0.5% of mixture showed much higher antibacterial activity than that of the cosmetics containing parabens. From these results, we concluded that the herbal extracts can be replaced to the conventional chemical preservatives, if a proper concentration of extract is chosen.
