A Study on the Japanese Irezumi Tattoo of Ukiyo-e pattern Design

This study is focused on the Japanese Irezumi Tattoo of Ukiyo-e pattern Design. And researched the changes in meaning of Japanese Irezumi Tattoo which started in recent. Thus, Japanese Irezumi Tattoo pattern design by the oldest, based on the concept of Ukiyo-e pattern in edo period. This research is trying to understand the Ukiyo-e pattern in edo period and have an effect the Japanese Irezumi Tattoo. And hope to be contributed to more easily accessible Tattoo and an unexplored field in beauty industry. This study researched the Ukiyo-e pattern in edo period previous studies, books of the Japanese Irezumi Tattoo design, articles, and over. Based on the Ukiyo-e pattern in edo period compared and analyzed appear Ukiyo-e pattern with the Japanese Irezumi Tattoo design. From this study, we can get the following conclusions. First, the Ukiyo-e pattern appear to 4 the Japanese Irezumi Tattoo design that are character person, oni of japanese ghost, animal and natural object. For the most part of japanese tattoo design are same to Ukiyo-e pattern in edo period or similar to mixing design is equal. Second, in the Japanese Irezumi Tattoo design of character person tattooing that is 108 Stars of Destiny, Oiran, yakusya(actor of kabuki) and kintaro. The 108 Stars of Destiny pattern are ‘Nine Tattooed Dragons’, ‘Multicoloured Leopard’, ‘Flowery Monk’ and so on. These features drawing mixing dragon and snake which is symbol of superhuman strength and bravery. Oiran(花魁) were courtesans in Japan. The oiran were considered a type of yjo(遊女) ‘woman of pleasure’ or prostitute. Their art and fashions often set trends and popular, because of this, cultural aspects of oiran traditions continue to be preserved to this day. Yakusya is actor of kabuki: Ishikawa Goemon was a semi-legendary Japanese outlaw hero. Kintaro(金太) is a folk hero from Japanese folklore. A child of superhuman strength, he was raised by a mountain hag on Mount Ashigara. Third, japanese ghost in the Ukiyo-e pattern is oni, skull, phantom and demon. These Japanese Irezumi Tattoo pattern symbol protect all of the evil spirits. Forth, carp of Ukiyo-e pattern is express with Kintaro that is symbol of subordinates and have a lot of descendants. Fifth, wild sea and raging waves in the Ukiyo-e pattern show dynamics inspire vitality. This study is meaningful in that based on the comparison study on the Ukiyo-e pattern Design of Japanese Irezumi Tattoo. Afterward this study is expected to contribute toward study on tattoo development in the beauty business.
