There are several cases which can contribute to examine literature on unification even though they are not written in the background prior to the division of country or not the historical novels. This study reviews the previous studies on Hwang Jin-Yi by Hong Suk-Joong and examines on the symbols appeared in the novel as a new means to interpret the work as literature on unification: focusing on the symbols and motives, the stone and cherries, which appear several times in the work. There are several stones in the work, and each of them have symbolic meanings beyond primary meanings. The oddly shaped stone from a stableman’s house reflects the karma which both North Korea and South Korea have as folk religion. Also the stone uses the space effectively to gain probability and completeness, which contributes to high literary value of the work. Sandae Rock stands for the encounter and affection. It maintains the general symbolic meaning of the rock, and by adding another meaning to it, the symbolic power earns more security. The stone bridges at the brook and Palgakjeong play the role in criticizing the time and satirizing the social conditions. This proves that Hwang Jin-Yi not just focuses on simply reproducing the customes. The cherries stands for beyond a simple fruit. The cherries, a love messanger from Jin-yi and Nom-Yi, contain secrets or deliver truths. These two characters’ love is not just a simple one, but function as an confrontation to the status system and empty formalities, which the work criticizes. Therefore, the cherries are the most connotative symbol with the theme and content of the work. There are several different stories and emotions in the nature and items around us beyond the category of historical novel. These symbols cannot be easily shared with other countries, which only have their special meanings in our country. Also, it is not so difficult to find such symbolic cases in the literature. Therefore, I expect that steady research on such context will contribute to the whole literature studies in Korea as well as being a good foundation to the researches on the unification literature.
