본 연구는 한 중년남성의 진로구성 과정을 이해함으로써 진로지도 및 상담 영역에서의 새로운 접근 가능성을 찾고자 질적 연구방법으로 진행하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 연구참여자의 초기 진로구성 과정은 성공을 향한 지속적인 추구 과정, 즉 ‘인정받음’의 갈구함으로 시작하여 ‘지향’과 ‘행함’의 계기들로 열려진 우연한 사건들의 계열화 과정이었다. 이었다. 부모로부터 충분한 인정과 지지를 경험하지 못했던 그는 잘 해낼 수 있을 것이라고 기대되는 일에 전념하였고, 성공에 대한 집착은 실패를 딛고 ‘일’을 지속하게 하는 한 가지 요인으로 작용한다. 열심히 ‘일’을 하는 과정에서 연구참여자는 자신의 경험과 유사하게 마음의 상처로 인하여 힘들어 하는 청소년들을 돕기로 결단한다. 문제아로 낙인찍힌 청소년들을 안아주는 적극적인 나눔과 채워줌의 행위를 통하여 연구참여자는 간절한 원함이었던 ‘인정받음’을 체험하게 된다. 그리고 그는 자신의 일을 ‘소명’으로 받아드리게 되었다. 소명의식과 소명수행은 긍정적인 순환 고리를 형성함으로써 중년이라는 나이에도 불구하고 자신의 일을 ‘신나게’ 지속하게 하는 열정의 원천으로 작용한다. 연구참여자의 진로구성 과정은 맡겨진 소명을 열심히 ‘행함’으로 본래의 자기 자신이 되어가는 실존적 삶의 과정이었던 것이다. 본 연구의 결과는 ‘에체브’에서 ‘멜라카’로의 일의 전환 가능성을 발견하였다는 데에서 그 의의를 가진다.

This study conducted via a qualitative research method explores the process of a middle-aged man who constructs his career path to figure out a new potential approach in career guidance and counseling. As a result, the early-career construction process of a research participant iscontinually pursuing success. He did not receive sufficient support or approval from his parents, and he devoted himself to the``work`` that he had expected to do well. His obsession with success affected how he did not give up his work. In the process of doing that, he decided to help the juvenile delinquents with similar experiences to his own. Through this ``positiveact`` of sharing, filling and generosity, he was able to feel acknowledgement that he desperately longed for. Then, his ``work`` had turned into a ``calling``. Both the awareness and performance of his calling made him work happily with passion even into the middle age period. The career construction process is the process of existential life. In that, he became his genuine ``self`` by tirelessly performing a given calling. This study ought to have significant meaning in that it presents the possibility that ``work`` could change over from `` (work as suffering and labor)`` to `` (work as fullness and joy)``.
