이 글은 서구 여성(사)박물관의 형성에서부터 최근까지의 발전 과정을 살펴봄으로써 여성(사)박물관을 개념화 하려는 시도이다. 전통적 박물관의 젠더대표성이 대체로 남성에 편향된 전시에 머물고 있다는 점을 지적하고, 그에 대한 대안으로서 1980년대 이후 등장한 여성(사)박물관들의 현황을 탐색하고, 향후 발전을 위한 과제들을 제시하고자 한다. 1980년대 이후 해외의 여성사 연구에 나타난 새로운 동향의 하나는 가히 ‘박물관운동’이라 일컬을 수 있을 만큼 붐을 이루며 건립된 여성(사)박물관에 대한 비판적 참여에 있다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 최근에 박물관의 성격과 개념이 크게 변모하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 세계 각국에서 매우 다양한 박물관 건립이 봇물을 이루고 있다는 맥락에서 보면 여성(사)박물관 건립은 그리 새로운 현상이 아닐 수도 있다. 그렇지만 여성(사)박물관 건립에 대한 열망 속에서, 2013년 현재 전 세계적으로 전 대륙에 걸쳐 60여 개의 여성(사)박물관이 건립되었으며 계속 증가추세에 있다는 점은 각별히 주의할 필요가 있다. 더욱이 그러한 바탕에는 역사와 사회발전의 과정 속에서 여성의 역할과 발자취를 기록하고 보존해야하며, 기록되지 않음으로써 역사의 수면 아래 오랫동안 묻혀있던 여성들의 이야기를 현재로 불러내 역사화해야 한다는 여성사 연구자들의 요구와 연구축적이 맞물려 있다. 필자의 관심을 끄는 점은 여성사 연구자들이 여성(사)박물관 건립의 기획 수립부터 완공까지 적극적으로 참가해 여성사의 문제의식을 공유하고 확대하는 등 여성(사)박물관을 실천의 영역으로 삼고 있다는 점에 있다. 요컨대, 여성(사)박물관은 역사의 현재성, 사료의 문제, 방법론의 문제 등 여성사연구의 주요한 질문을 비추는 거울이 된다는 점에서, 여성사박물관 운동의 의미는 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않는다.
This article points out the male-bias of existing museum exhibitions and examines the departure of women``s museums that have appeared since the 1980s from traditional history museums. A new tendency found in research on women’s history since the 1980s is the interest in women’s museums, the exponential increase of which befits the term the ``museum movement.`` Considering how diverse museums have become, how the concept of ``museum`` itself is being debated and how museums of all kinds are constantly being built around the world, the increase of women’s museums may hardly be a surprise. However, it is worth noting that as of 2013, there are about 60 women’s museums in all continents of the world and that the number is growing, reflecting the persistent demand for recording and preserving women``s traces in history and social development. What particularly draws my attention is that women``s history scholars are using women``s museums as a space for sharing and expanding the consciousness about women``s history, actively taking part in the creation of women``s museums, from planning to completion. In this paper, I argue that the concepts and goals of women``s museums that have been recently established or are under talks of being created lack clarity and that there are vast gaps among women``s museums depending on where the emphasis is between ``women`` and ``museum.`` Women``s museums can function as a mirror reflecting the important questions of women``s history such as the nowness of history, historical sources, and methodology, which is why women``s museum movements matter so much.
