1980년 5월 18일 전남대생들의 시위는 1980년 봄 민주화운동의 연장선상에서 발생했다. 학생들의 시위는 민주정부 수립을 좌절시킨 신군부의 5·17 계엄확대조치와 계엄군의 야만적 진압행위로 인해 시민들의 참여를 촉발시켰고, 마침내 항쟁으로 발전했다. 김대중은 5·18현장에 없었다. 그와 5·18 현장을 연결해주는 사람도 없었다. 당연히 김대중은 항쟁의 주체가 아니었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 항쟁에 참여하는 사람들 대부분은 시위 현장에서 ‘김대중 석방하라!’는 구호를 외쳤다. 김대중은 사실상 학생·시민들과 함께 있었다. 김대중과 광주시민들의 결합은 지역적 특수성이 반영된 결과이다. 호남지역은 박정희 정권의 인사 및 경제개발정책에서 심한 차별을 받았다. 박정희 독재정부가 사라진 1980년 호남인들은 민주정부 수립을 위한 절호의 기회가 왔다고 생각했다. 호남인들은 자연스럽게 민주화운동 지도자이자 동향인인 김대중의 대통령 당선에 큰 기대를 걸었다. 그런데 5·17쿠데타로 인해 김대중이 체포되었고, 민주정부 수립도 무산되었다. 호남인들의 실망과 분노가 클 수밖에 없었다. 5·18항쟁이 김대중의 사주에 의해 발생했다는 신군부의 주장은 일고의 가치가 없는 완전히 조작된 것이다. 다른 한편 신군부가 자신을 체포한 것이 5·18항쟁 발발의 가장 큰 요인과 배경이라는 김대중의 주장 역시 과장된 면이 없지 않다. 김대중은 항쟁의 전개과정에서 항쟁을 증폭시킨 주요한 변수 중 하나였다고 정의하는 것이 보다 적절한 표현일 것이다.

The May 18th Gwangju Democratic Uprising was first started by students in front of the gate of Chonnam University on the morning of May 18th in 1980. The students` demonstration against the May 17th coup d``etat of the New Military Power developed into the democratic uprising by the citizens` participation. The citizens` participation occurred against the coup d``etat of the New Military Power, and against the indiscriminate murder and brutal suppression of soldiers. Kim Dae Jung was suppressed severely by Park Jung Hee dictatorship since the president election of 1971. Likewise, the province of Chonnam, including Gwangju city, were discriminated by Park Jung Hee regime. and the province of Chonnam had lagged far behind the other areas in industry. Kim Dae Jung got great support from the progressive intellectuals and masses since 1970s. But Kim Dae Jung was arrested by the New Military Power on May 17, 1980. The New Military Power tried him to put to death on suspicion of agitation of the Gwangju Uprising. Kim dae Jung was one of the greatest victims of the Gwangju Uprising. The Gwangju citizens became angry at the coup d`etat of the New Military Power, at the indiscriminate murder and brutal suppression of soldiers toward students, and at the arrest of Kim Dae Jung. Kim Dae Jung was not in Gwangju during the Gwangju Uprising. He didn``t know the Gwangju Uprising until July 10. Nevertheless, most of Gwangju citizens thought of him during the Gwangju Uprising, and they shouted slogan: "Release Kim Dae Jung!" Consequently, Kim Dae Jung was with Gwangju citizens during the Gwangju Uprising. He was not the direct background and cause of the outbreak of the Gwangju Uprising. However, he was a very important element at the development process of the Gwangju Uprising. After Gwangju Uprising, Honam masses and Kim Dae Jung tried to find out the truth of the Gwangju Uprising, to retrieve the honor of the victims, and to punish Jun Doo Hwan and his followers. In conclusion, Kim Dae Jung had a special connection with the Gwangju Uprising.
