Bagram Korean Hospital (BKH) is Civilian Humanitarian Assistance Mission hospital in operation since 2010 in Bagram Air Field (BAF), Parwan province, Afghanistan. The primary mission of the hospital is providing medical services to Afghanistan people and medical training local medical staffs. This is a documentation of its outcome and legacy of its 4 year experience, in hopes that it will provide a better understanding of humanitarian assistance mission of this kind and in its mission planning in the future. All of the patient statistics were gathered through electronic medical records. The problems with running a civilian humanitarian mission hospital were analyzed, and effective approach was sought along with information about hospital’s capabilities by Logical Framework Process (LFP). Other common problems we always faced are also described. There were 24 Korean doctors, 27 nurses, 29 technicians and officers involved during the whole mission period. Average stay of Korean staffs in Afghanistan was 16 months. Currently, in 2014, BKH have 25 Korean and 42 Afghanistan staffs. From June 2010 to December 2013, there were 147,010 outpatient visits and 1,022 operations performed. Patients had chronic issues rather than acute illnesses due to the problems reaching the hospital. Most concerning issues are lack of medical resources, patient referral problems, and cooperation with local medical systems. The doctor trainees and American hospital doctors helped with running the clinics. A referral system was established with the local Ministry of Public Health Department. BKH is one of the successful examples in Afghanistan. We provide treatment to the local patient and contribute to positive influence to whole missions in Afghanistan. The benefit of the location in BAF is good safety for the medical staff, but difficult to access for the patient. The BKH could be a new model of war field humanitarian mission hospital.
