Medication-Related Problems exist in a sizable number of patients evaluated by emergency physicians. Some medication-related problems present clinically as time-critical emergencies, while other medication-related problems present with less acuity. Emergency physicians often fail to diagnose or recognize medication-related problems, when they occur. Emergency physicians are especially unlikely to diagnose medication-related problems when the patient’s chief complaint is not directly related to the medicationrelated problems that are present. The average age of most nations’ populations continues to increase. Given that older patients are likely to be prescribed multiple medications, it is likely that medication-related problems will become more frequent in the coming years. It will become increasingly important for emergency physicians to diagnose and intervene when an avoidable medication-related problem is present. In this talk, Dr Gaddis will present examples of time-critical emergencies and non time-critical clinical cases that are due to medicationrelated problems. Dr. Gaddis will present a classification scheme for medication-related problems that is widely used by pharmacists. This classification scheme has three component parts. The first is a statement of the type of problem (s) present in a patient. The second is an estimate of the probability that a medication-related problem is present in the patient. The third is an estimate of the degree of avoidability of each medication-related problem. This classification scheme can help the busy clinician improve their ability to recognize and classify medication-related problems, so that they will become more capable of detecting the medication-related problems that are present and less likely to cause medication-related problems themselves, due to their prescribing choices. While communicating this information, Dr. Gaddis will present an overview of the emergency medicine literature regarding medicationrelated problems, to document the size of the problem, and to suggest potential approaches to improve the detection and monitoring of these problems, so that their frequency can be decreased. Medication-related problems increase the cost of care, length of hospital stay, morbidity, and mortality for our patients. Those who attend this talk will learn to improve their ability to recognize and classify medication-related problems, and will learn approaches to decrease the frequency of medication-related problems among emergency department patients to whom they provide medical care.
