근대계몽기 한글 신문에 실린 단형서사 292편 중 24%에 이르는 70편에서 환상성을 활용하고 있다. 신문에서 환상적 단형서사를 활용한 데에는 낯선 매체인 신문을 독자에게 친숙하게하려는 것, 또 다수의 신문이 창간되면서 경쟁적인 구도 속에서독자를 확보하려 했던 것, 친숙한 방식으로 계몽의 목적을 달성하고자 했던 것 등이 작용했다. 이 시기 환상적 서사의 유형은 우화, 몽유, 기이로 대별된다. 이 시기 우화 유형은 외래 우화를 번역/번안한 것과 창작한 것으로 나뉘는데, 번역/번안을 한 경우에는 보편적인 교훈의 메시지가 강했고, 창작된 경우에는 당대 현실에 대한 비판과 풍자의속성이 강하게 드러났다. 번안을 한 작품에서는 서사의 면모가더욱 강화된 경향이 있다. 몽유 유형에서는 전대와는 달리 꿈과 현실의 경계를 분명히 하고 이계를 동경의 대상으로 삼는것을 차단한다. 이를 통해 현실 문제를 부각시키는 한편 개인적 욕망의 영역은 철저히 배척하였다. 기이 유형은 현실을 성찰하거나 비판하는 데 무게 중심을 두고 있다는 점에서 당대의흐름을 반영하지만 우화나 몽유 유형보다는 상대적으로 환상적세계를 수긍하거나 지향하는 색채를 띠면서 당대의 주된 흐름에서 벗어나 있다는 것이 특징이다. 이 시기 한글 신문의 단형서사에 나타난 환상적 서사는, 환상성이 현실성과 상충되는 특성이 아니라 현실을 성찰하는 효과적인 기제가 될 수 있음을 보여주었다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 거기에서 더 나아가 이 시기 계몽의 초점과 지향점이 하나가아니었음을 보여준다는 점에서 좀 더 심층적인 고찰이 필요하다.

Short narratives of early modern Hangeul paper media are 292pieces. The proportion of fantastic narrative among them is 24%. Types of these fantastic narrative can be divided into fable, dream vision and oddity. In fable type, it is divided into translation or adaptation of a foreign fable and creation of it, and in the case of translation or adaptation, it had a strong universal moral message, and in the case of creation, it strongly showed a quality of contemporary reality`s criticism and satire. In the piece of adaptation, the aspect of dramatic narration tends to be more reinforced. Whereas when in creation, a sense of purpose is strong so that it tends to depend on conversational mode than on description of dramatic fashion. That is to say it shows the limit of newspaper writing staff,not a professional writer. In dream vision type, due to a media known as newspaper it shows characteristic of editor intervention. Also, contrary to description of traditional dream vision, meanwhile making the boundary of dreams and events clearly and objectifying reality, it tends to expose the exclusion of territory of personal desire. In this section it is showing the tendency from writing staff emphasizing crisis of their nation. Oddity type uses surreal and unusual material. In this oddity type, alike types of fable or dream vision, it has a character of concentrating on reflecting or criticising reality. And also, than the type of fable or dream vision, it relatively accepts fantastic world. It is important that the fantastic narrative appeared in Hangeul paper media of early modern, because it shows that the fantasy can be effective way to reflect reality.
