서포 김만중이 살았던 17세기 후반은 정치적 격변기였다. 특히, 1680년대는 숙종의 환국정치와 노론과 남인간의 치열한 갈등으로 국정이 혼란 속에 있었다, 게다가 국왕의 왕비 교체 문제는 이런 혼란을 더욱 복잡하게 만들었다. 이러한 정치적 혼란 속에서 서포 김만중은 경연 끝에 국왕 숙종에게 시정의 여론과 조사석의 인사 문제를 거론하다가 숙종의 분노를 싸서 선천에 유배되었다. 그는 선천 유배 중에서도 효심이 많은 학자 출신의 고급 관료답게, 효심의 토대로 한 한시「사친시」를 창작하였다. 그러면서 한편으로는 사친시의 서사화에 비유될 수 있는 소설「구운몽」을 창작하여 한양에 있는 모친 윤씨에게 보내기도 하였다. 그리고 그 후 남해에 유배 중에는「사씨남정기」와 더불어 모친을 위해 다시 짧은 전기 형식의 「정경부인 윤씨행장」을 모친 사후에 지었다. 이러한 유배 중에 창작한 그의 창작물 중에서도 소설「구운몽」은 그의 효심을 발휘한 특별한 소설로서의 의미를 가진다. 왜냐하면, 당시의 선비들이 한시를 창작하는 것은 일상적인 것이었지만, 고급 관료가 소설을 창작한다는 것, 그리고 소설 작품을 창작하여 모친에게 바친다는 것은 일반 유학자로서는 아주 예외적인 일에 속하기 때문이다. 서포 김만중이 유배 중에「구운몽」창작한 이유에 대하여 조선조 시대의 실학자 이규경은 『오주연문장전산고』에서 모친을 위하여 지은 것이라고 평가하였다. 이러한 기록에 근거하여 그 이후의 다수의 비평가들은 「구운몽」의 창작 이유를 모친을 위한 파한거리로 이해하게 되었다. 필자는 서포 김만중이「구운몽」을 창작한 이유가 모친을 위한 단순한 파한거리로서 파악하기에는 너무나 진지한 주제가 작품 속에 담겨 있기에, 비록 모친을 위한 창작이라고 하더라도 모친을 위하는 작자의 의도는 파한거리의 차원이 아님을 밝혀 보고자 하였다. 즉, 서포 김만중이 모친 윤씨를 위하여 「구운몽」을 창작하였다는 평가의 근거는 그의 모친 윤씨가 소설을 즐겨하였다는 사실과, 소설을 지어 모친에게 보냈다는 것에 근거하고 있다. 그러나 사실은 서포 김만중은 늙은 모친의 파한거리를 위해 창작한 것이 아니라, 효와 충을 주제로 한 소설로써 모친의 고통을 풀어주고, 국왕의 마음을 바로잡게 하려고 소설을 창작하였다. 즉,「구운몽」의 주제를 염두에 두고 모친을 위한 창작이라는 쪽에서 창작동기를 살펴보면, 그것은 일상적인 차원으로서의 여성들과는 위치에 놓여있던 모친을 위로하기 위한 창작으로 해석한다. 더 구체적으로 말하면,「구운몽」의 창작 동기와 관련한 작가 서포 김만중이 생각한 모친의 위로는 파한의 차원이 아니라, 국가를 위해 목숨을 바친 남편 김익겸의 영혼을 위로할수 있는 국가적 차원의 그 무엇이어야 할 것이다. 그러기에「구운몽」의 주제의식과 관련된 창작 동기는 숙종이 보여준 왕후와 궁녀 사이에서 야기된 애정 갈등 내지 궁중 혼사 문제 제기와 그 갈등의 해소 방안과 연관하여 접근하여야 적절할 결과를 얻어내게 될 것이다.

The latter half of 17th century that Seopo KimMan-jung lived was the era of political turbulence. Due to severe conflicts between factions the administration of the country was in confusion.. Moreover, the problem of the king’s replacing the queen made this confusion more complex.. Due to such political confusion, Seopo Kim Man-jung proposed honest words to the King and because of this he was exiled to Seoncheon. He was devoted to his parents and a high ranking government official of scholar origin and wrote a Chinese poem ‘Ode to Parents’ based on his filial devotion in the early period of exile. And in the middle years of exile he wrote a novel ‘Guunmong’. And in the latter period of exile, he wrote ‘Yoonsihaengsang’, which is a kind of a short biography. Of his literary works, the novel ‘Guunmong’ has a special meaning since it was very common for classical scholars of the times to write Chinese poems but it was very exceptional for a high ranking government official to write a novel. With regard to the reason why Seopo Kim Man-jung wrote a novel, a practical scientist in the Joeseon dynasty Lee Kyu-kyeong assessed that it was written for her mother. Based on such records, most of the critics afterwards understood that Guunmong was written for a pastime for her mother. Now, let’s reveal the fact that the reason that Seopo Kim man-jung wrote Guunmong was not just to present a pastime for his mother. The assessment that Seopo Kim man-jung wrote Guunmong for his mother Yoon is based on the fact that his mother Yoon enjoyed novels and he sent her the novel that he wrote. But in fact, Seopo Kim Man-jung wrote the novel to relieve her mother’s pains and correct the mind of the King by the novel whose theme is filial devotion and loyalty to the King, rather that just to present a pastime to his old mother. In other words, the theme of Guunmong contains the author’s intention to console the soul of his father Kim Ik-gyum who dedicated his life for the country, not just to ease her mother’s pains. Moreover, the theme of Guunmong includes the author’s intention to correct the mind of the King who fell in love with a court lady temporarily. In view of such a theme, the motive of writing the novel Guunmong can hardly be said to be a pastime for his mother.As such, the incident relating to the enlightenment of the Buddhist monk which Guunmong describes contains the author’s intention to have the King become aware of his confused mind. And a young Buddhist monk is reincarnated into Yangsoyu and leads a happy life with several wives and concubines, which implies that the King should select his subjects of different dispositions in a balanced manner.
