이 글은 정인의 현대적 의미 연구 에 대한 글이다. 시대와 장소를 불문하고, 공동체의 각 구성원은 일정한 역할 분담이 요구되며, 그 공동체의 구성원이 각자의 역할을 이행함으로써 그 공동체를 유지 발전할 수 있다. 하지만, 각자의 역할을 이행함에 있어 시간적, 장소적, 환경적인 요건 등으로 인하여 어려움을 겪는 경우가 있다. 이런 경우, 그 구성원간의 상호보완 활동이 필요하다. 승가 역시 승려들의 수행의 본연의 역할을 하기 위하여 하지 못하는 행동이나, 어려운 행동의 경우에는 대행인이 있어 그 역할을 대신하였다. 그 대행인(代行人)을 정인(淨人)이라고 한다. 정인(淨人)은 사찰의 건축물 등을 건축하는 일이나, 승가 혹은 유행자 들에게 음식을 만들어서 접대하거나, 금전이나 물건의 교환 등에 관계되는 일들을 한다. 즉, 정인(淨人)은 출가자들에게 청정성, 투명성, 합법성을 부여하여 재가자들의 비난에서 벗어나게 도와주는 역할과 동시에 관리인, 또는 대행인 등의 보조역할을 하였다. 이러한 정인(淨人)은 오늘날의 재가 종무원으로 볼 수 있다. 물론 오늘날의 재가 종무원은 초기승가에서의 淨人과의 시대, 성질 등의 차이점이 있겠지만, 출가자의 대행 역할과 보조 역할을 한다는 점에서 유사한 의미 또한 있음을 알 수가 있다. 또한 과거에 비해 오늘날의 현실은 더욱 복잡다단하고 세분화되었기 때문에 현재에 맞는 출가자와 재가종무원의 역할분담과 화합이 더욱 중요하다고 본다. 왜냐하면 정인이 갖는 함의(含意)의 핵심은 다름 아닌, 재가종무원이 정인으로서의 맡은 바 자신의 역할을 해내야만이 출가자와의 화합할 수 있기 때문이다. 따라서 정인과 수행자의 조화로운 화합의 회통은 안으로는 승단의 위상확립과 승가의 발전에 기여할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 밖으로는 정인의 삶도 윤택해질 수 있음을 보여준다.
This study is on Studies of Contemporary meanings of Kappiya - karaka(淨人) . Regardless of time and places, each member is required to play his or her own roles in order to keep and maintain a community. When the members of the community play their own roles, the community can continue to maintain and develop. However, the members sometimes have difficulty playing their own roles due to time, places and environmental reasons. In this case, each member needs complementary cooperation with other members. Samgha(僧伽) also had an agent play Monks roles in the case they had something they could not do or something hard to do because of their asceticism. The agent(代行人) is called Kappiya - karaka(淨人). Kappiya - karaka(淨人) constructs buildings in a temple, cooks and serves meals to the Samgha(僧伽) or pilgrims, or does tasks related to the exchange of money or things. In other words, Kappiya - karaka(淨人) gave cleanness, transparency and legitimacy to the monks so that they could stay away from the blame by lay people. They also assisted managers or other agents. The Kappiya - karaka(淨人) can be seen as a lay clerk of religious affairs today. Although there are some differences between Kappiya - karaka and a lay clerk of religious affairs in time and qualities, they also have many traits in common including a role of agent and a role of assistant for the monks. Moreover, as today is more complicated and detailed than the past, it is important to divide roles between the monks and the lay clerks of religious affairs adequately for the current situation and cooperate together. This is because core implication of Kappiya - karaka can be harmonized with the monks only when the lay clerks of religious affairs play their roles as Kappiya - karaka. Therefore, conciliation and harmony of diverse opinions between Kappiya - karaka and the monks not only contribute to the establishment of status of the Buddhist monastic community and the development of the Samgha(僧伽) but also polish the lives of Kappiya - karaka.
