이 글은 20세기 초 아방가르드 예술과 중요한 관계를 맺고 있는 공연예술장르인 카바레의 예술적 의의를 찾는 것을 목표로 한다. 춤과 노래, 시, 퍼포먼스, 그림, 연극 등 다양한 매체가 공존하는 종합무대예술이라는 점에서 카바레는 기존의 전통 연극과 많은 차이를 보이고 있다. 그러나 웃음과 풍자를 공연의 무기이자 목표로 삼는다는 점에서 카바레는 기존 희극의 연장선상에 있다. 따라서 이 글은 카바레의 뿌리를 오스트리아 희극 문학, 특히 빈 민중희극의 전통에서 살펴보았다. 우스꽝스럽고 익살스런 연기, 신랄한 풍자와 다채로운 유머를 특징으로 하는 빈 민중희극은 카바레의 전신이라 할 수 있다. 카바레는 민중희극의 전통을 계승하면서도 다른 한편으로는 전통과의 단절과 혁신을 부르짖는 아방가르드 예술가들의 활동무대가 되었다. 예술 창작자와 수용자의 거리, 예술장르간의 경계를 허물고 도덕과 터부, 권력, 전쟁 등 시대적 억압으로부터의 해방을 부르짖는 20세기아방가르드들에게 카바레는 자유의 웃음을 터트릴 수 있는 열린 공간이 된다. 특히 스위스<카바레 볼테르 Cabaret Voltaire>는 파괴와 혁신의 예술운동인 다다이즘의 본고장이 된다.
This paper has as its objective the discovering of the artistic significance of the performing arts genre cabaret which has an important relationship with the avant-garde arts of the early 20th century. The fact that it is a comprehensive stage art in which various media such as dance, songs, poems, performance, art, theater, etc. co-exist distinguishes cabaret in a significant way from the pre-existing conventional theater arts. However, cabaret is an extension of the existing comedies in that it has - as its secret weapon and objective of performance - laughter and parody. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine the roots of cabaret in the Austrian comic literature, especially the viennese folk comedy tradition. viennese folk comedy which is characterized by funny and comic acting, biting satire, and colorful humor can be said to be the predecessor of cabaret. While cabaret inherited the folk comedy tradition, it became an active arena for avant-garde artists who cried out for a break with tradition and advocated innovation. Cabaret becomes an open space for laughters of freedom for 20th-century avant-gardes who clamored for the breaking down of walls among the different genres of the arts, the removal of the gap between those who create art and those who appreciate it, and liberation from the oppressors of the times such as morality, taboo, power structures, and war. In particular, the Swiss Cabaret Voltaire becomes the birthplace of Dadaism, an artistic movement of destruction and innovation.
