본고에서는 2000년 이후에 출간된 한국고소설 영역본인 엠마누엘 페스트라이쉬(Emanuel Pastreich)의 연암작품 영역본, The Novels of Park Jiwon과 마이클 페티드(Michael J. Pettid)의 <운영전> 영역본, Unyong-jon을 살펴보았다. 원전의 선택, 작품의 번역, 주석, 서문 등 여러 면에서 꼼꼼하게 살펴본 결과, 다행히도 원전에 충실하며, 주석 작업에도 공을 들인 좋은 번역이었다. 본 번역본들은 한국의 연구성과도 반영하고 있어, 영어권에서 쓰일 학술연구 자료로서도 적절했다. 2000년 이전의 한국고소설 영역본들과 비교해보면, 2000년 이후에는 한국내 연구 성과의 축적, 영문 한국학자료의 개발, 용어의 통일을 위한 용례사전의 보완 등 영역에 도움이 되는 작업들이 이루어지면서 번역환경은 더 좋아졌다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 문제는 이러한 한국고전을 번역할 수 있는 역자가 많지 않다는 것이다. 따라서 국가차원의 지속적인 지원이 필요하며, 영어원어민 학자와 한국학자와의 공동번역 등을 대안으로 삼아야겠다.

In this treatise, I examine The Novels of Park Jiwon, translated by Emanuel Pastreich, and Unyong-jon, translated by Michael J. Pettid; both these works have been published since the year 2000. I closely examine choices of original text, translation, footnotes, and translator introductions. The translations themselves were excellent, as the original texts were carefully annotated and translated in full. They are worthy academic materials that reflect contemporary research in Korea. The English glossary of Korean studies is being updated constantly, and English language source books of Korean studies are being developed since the year 2000. However, the serious problem is that the competent translators have been decreased. Therefore, translators need continuous support at the national rather than individual level. Native English speaking scholars must be encouraged to collaborate with Korean scholars on the translation of Korean classical novels. These steps will serve as a foundation to promote the English translation of Korean classical novels.
