이 글은 정보사회가 되면서 도시 건축이 사회문화적 관점에서 어떤 의미를 갖는지 탐색하기 위한 연구의 시도이다. 정보기술로 인해 속도가 빨라지고 이동성의 발달로 인해 거리개념이 달라지면서 시간과 공간에 대한 이해를 다르게 하도록 만 들었다. 속도의 증가로 인한 시간의 축약이 인지적 측면에서 공간의 의미를 약화 시키고 있다는 것이다. 시간과 공간은 정보기술의 발달로 역동적인 특질을 보여주 게 되었다. 속도에 의한 시간 압축은 장소성을 더욱 잃게 만들었고, 공간경계는 중요치 않게 되었으며, 이동성은 도시공간에 대한 장소적 인지를 탈구획화했다. 오늘날 도심은 그 역할이나 기능이 변화하였고, 도시생태학적인 면에서도 전통적 인 접근방법으로 이해하는 데는 한계를 가지게 되었다. 공간 구조와 장소 정체성 에 대한 이해를 과거와 달리 해야 한다는 것이다. 그러나 도시복합건물의 등장은 인간들의 상호작용을 가능하도록 하는 새로운 공간을 만들어주었고, 이전의 쇼핑 이나, 이벤트 그리고 테마화 만을 목적으로 하는 장소 이외에 다양한 매개공간을 제공함으로써 장소에 대해 다시 생각하게 만들었다. 도시복합공간의 매개공간으로 서의 장소는 사람들 간에 다양한 활동을 도모하게 되고 상상을 이끌어내는 참여가 가능해지게 되면서 장소성을 회복하게 된다. 시간에 의해 압도된 공간이 장소성으 로 드러나게 된 것이다. 도시의 테마화한 복합건물은 우리에게 다양한 경험을 제 공하게 되고, 그 곳에서 공간의 구조를 체험하게 함으로써 더 이상 일시적이고 이행적이며 스쳐지나가는 탈장소적 공간으로서의 도시 들여다보기는 지양해야 한다는 시사점을 던져준다. 도심의 복합공간을 통해 일부 공간들이 기억의 장소, 체험 의 장소가 되면서 장소성을 회복하고 있다. 따라서 도시공간을 일률적으로 이해하 는 기존의 시각과 달리 새로운 관점을 열어주는 공간에 대한 이해로서 테마화된 복합공간을 보고자 한다. 그렇게 될 때 도시공간의 장소성 회복에 대한 기대를 가 지게 되는 것이다.
This paper aims to explore the meaning of urban architecture with socio-cultural perspective in the era of information society. Information technology has transformed the understanding of the time and space due to the speed and mobilities. In the information society, the increase of speed is implicitly diminishing the space perception, namely time and space have dynamic qualities these days, which it is related to the name of time space compression. The time compression caused by speed became more and more placeless. Spatial barriers are less important and mobile facilities are developed in several forms. Urban center has lost its role and function by the speed and mobilities, so urban ecology has changed in the information society. In a word, it was shown that the identity of place had disappear. However the appearance of urban complex malls provide new space for the purpose of the interaction with human agents, even though it has the ares of shopping, event, and theme within a densely built-up space. Such a space of urban complex is to restore the place-ness through imagination and participation of human to communicate with several activities. Space overwhelmed by time had transformed into place-ness. Accordingly, while information society has provoked the change of space like a flow space based on the time compression, urban theming complexes give us different spaces and the structure of space within it affects the way in which human acts in the social cultural context.
