이 논문은 글 없는 그림책 『노란 우산』과, 최소한의 글로 많은 이야기를 담고있는 그림책 『로지의 산책』의 그림을 통해서 그 의미를 읽고자 한 글이다. 이 연구에서는 그림책의 의미를 공간, 시간, 색채의 이미지텔링이 어떤 의미로 작용하는 가 검토했다. 공간의 활용과 변화는 시간의 흐름을 암시하기 때문에 공간과 시간은 매우 밀접한 의미를 내포하고 있다. 공간을 통한 경험적 사실을 갖고 시간을 추정하는 형식이라고 볼 수 있다. 『로지의 산책』에서는 로지가 닭장을 나와 산책을 했던 공간들이 한 눈에 볼 수 있도록 그림지도처럼 그려져 있으며, 로지는 산책 후 자신의 집으로 돌아온다. 그러나 노란 우산의 주인공이 밟았던 공간은 처음부터 끝까지 따라가 보아야 알 수 있다. 이러한 공간의 상상력을 통해서 시간의 의미를 상상했을 때, 『로지의 산책』은 회귀적 시간이며, 『노란 우산』은 직선적 시간이라고 할 수 있다. 평화로운 농가의 침입자 여우가 못된 짓을 꿈꾸어도 응징을 받게 되는 이 이야기는 그림책의 공간을 통하여 선악의 이분법적 대응을 보여준다. 그러나 이 그림책에서 악을 대변하는 여우의 모습과 행동은 여우답지 않게 어리석은 실수투성이의 인물이며, 이것은 독자에게 재치와 위트를 느낄 수 있는 특별한 장치로 작용한다. 이 그림책에 일관되게 사용된 노란색은 욕구불만을 나타내는 상징색으로 여우의 상태를 잘 보여준다. 처음 그림의 시작은 주변 풍경이 그리 밝지 않은 회색빛 톤으로 시작되지만 『노란 우산』의 색깔은 페이지를 거듭할수록 밝아진다. 이 그림책의 키워드를 연상한다면 외로움, 우울함, 동행, 기쁨, 희망과 같은 단어들이 떠오르는 그림책이다. 이 논문은 이처럼 공간, 시간, 색채의 이미지텔링을 통한 그림책 읽기를 시도했으며, 글 없는(혹은 최소한의 글로 언급된) 그림책의 이미지텔링으로 어떤 의미를 떠올릴 수 있는가를 분석하였다.
This study attempted to explore the meaning of a wordless picture book titled Yellow Umbrella and Rosie’s Walk, a picture book with a minimal amount of words. For this, there was analysis of how the image-telling of space, time and color works in terms of the meaning of a picture book. Because the use and change of space imply the flow of time, space and time are very closely related. It can be said that time is estimated based on empirical facts through space. In Rosie’s Walk, the spaces that Rosie passed by after escaping from her henhouse are illustrated just a pictorial map. At the end of the walk, she returns back to her henhouse. However, in order to find out the place that the main character from Yellow Umbrella came from, the reader needs to follow the whole process from the beginning to the end. When the meaning of time is imagined through this kind of spatial imagination, Rosie’s Walk depicts regressive time while Yellow Umbrella depicts linear time. A fox breaks into a peaceful farm. It just dreams of doing something wrong, and then it is punished for that. This story reveals a dichotomous response (good or evil) through the picture book’s space. In this picture book, however, the fox, which represents evil, is far from a typical cunning and sly one. This reckless and clumsy attitude works as a special mechanism which leads readers to experience wisdom and wit. The yellow color which symbolizes discontent of basic desire delete is found throughout the book. It well represents the fox’s current state. The book begins with somewhat an ash-colored background. However, it becomes brighter over time. The keywords of this picture book include loneliness, depression, accompanying, joy and hope. This study tried to see the picture book through the image-telling of space, time and color. It also analyzed what kind of meaning we could think of through the image-telling of a wordless picture book (or the one witha minimal amount of words).
